Starwood Preferred Guest Announces Take Three, Their Newest Promotion

Starwood Preferred Guest has announced their newest promotion, Take Three.  The promotion starts May 27th and runs through September 4th, 2017.  It rewards members who stay 2 nights or more at SPG properties worldwide.

Marriott and SPG have been quick to provide additional benefits to both Marriott and SPG members after the acquisition was finalized.  They quickly announced the ability to transfer points back and forth and a status match program as well.  They even coordinated promotions across all three programs.

Unlike the most recent promotions, Marriott, SPG and Ritz-Carlton all have different promotions this time around.  I already wrote up my thoughts on the Marriott promotion.  I also did a head-to-head comparison of the Marriott and SPG promos.

Here’s the key details of the SPG promo:

  • Double points on all weekday stays of 2 nights or more.
  • Triple points on all weekend stays of 2 nights or more where a weekend is defined as including a Friday or Saturday night (Thursday or Friday in the Middle East).
  • 1,500 bonus points at certain properties if you hold the SPG AMEX card.
  • Not all hotels are participating in the promotion.  Here’s the full list of participating properties.

Is This A Good Promo?

This promotion is a bit of a mixed bag compared to the previous promotion that SPG released this year.  The earlier promotion featured double points, but not triple points.  However, there was no minimum stay requirement. And, there were bigger bonuses for road warriors.

The 1,500 bonus points per stay for SPG AMEX cardholders had me excited until I actually looked deeper.  There are only 14 states in the US that even have a participating property.  In an environment where I expect the participating property list to disappoint, this is a new low.  I can’t even imagine why SPG would bother rolling something out with so many properties opting out.  News Flash: There are a lot of SPG hotels in the state of New York.  Not a single one is participating in the AMEX bonus.
