The folks from Starwood Preferred Guest announced their upcoming promotion along with a contest:
SPG Triple Up has ended, but your next opportunity to earn bonus Starpoints is right around the corner. Announcing SPG More for You. Members who register and stay two or more nights between September 12 and December 18th, 2016 will earn:
• Double Starpoints on weekday stays
• Triple Starpoints on stays that include a Friday or Saturday (Thursday or Friday in the Middle East)
Registration begins September 12 so mark your calendars. In the meantime, try your luck at the SPG Open More game. You’ll have the chance to instantly win 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 Starpoints®, or 1 Free Night Award. Plus, each time you play, you’ll be entered to win the grand prize: 5 Free Night Awards and 50,000 Starpoints.* Play now at spg.com/moreforyou. Good luck!
*One play per day. Game ends September 11, 2016.
It seems they got the memo from IHG about including some game elements (though SPG has had their share of games in the past), which means you’ll have the chance to win nice prizes between now and when the promo starts on September 12th.
When I first read the language I though the deadline for the contest was a typo but it runs until the promo starts, not during the same period as the promotion. Nice little way to keep us interested until then, especially since 5 free nights and 50,000 Starpoints is one heck of a nice gift. I’m not greedy, so I’ll be happy with 1,000 points, and I’ll be sure to play on a daily basis (you should too, it’s free!).
So, How About The Promo Itself?
It’s hard to say if this is better than the previous SPG Promo, Triple Up. That was triple Starpoints for Sheraton stays, regardless of days of the week. You could also earn an extra 1,000 points for weekend stays across any brand.
Here, there’s no specific requirement to stay at a Sheraton to earn triple points, but only weekend stays qualify. Depending on your average daily rate, 1,000 Starpoints per stay is generally better for those short weekend stays where rates are lower.
Regardless, the promotion itself isn’t overwhelming, but it’s a nice plus for folks who plan to stay at SPG properties through the end of the year. I’d say it’s not lucrative enough to switch business from another chain, but so far there’s not much out there. I was underwhelmed by the IHG promo (which I’ll be covering shortly) and Hyatt hasn’t released another promo yet. So, for now, the SPG promo is comparatively good.
