Marriott Is Adding To Their Summer Promotion In A Good Way
Note: thanks to Stacy for pointing out this is only if you choose to earn miles for your stays.
Marriott rolled out their summer promotion just about a week ago, but they’re back at it again. In an age where hotel occupancy and rate are ever higher, their initial summer promotion wasn’t super exciting:
- You’ll earn 2,000 bonus points for each stay after your second stay
- After your 6th stay you’ll earn 1,000 United Airlines MileagePlus miles
They’re back into the market again with an improvement. Quoting their release:
If you are in need of a little incentive to fly away for a relaxing vacation, Marriott Rewards members who are also enrolled in the loyalty programs of its partner airlines – United, American, Delta Air Lines® or Southwest Airlines® – can earn 1,000 bonus miles* per hotel stay this summer. The offer is valid for stays at participating full-service Marriott International hotels in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. Participating brands include JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Gaylord Hotels, and Delta Hotels
Beginning today through July 15, 2016, members may register for the promotion. Members must also select the preferred airline in their Marriott Rewards account to qualify for the offer. Stays must be booked June 1 through July 15, 2016 and occur June 1 through August 31, 2016.
Even though this is only for full service hotels, 1,000 airline miles is a pretty nice bonus on a hotel stay.
You’ll need to pick which airline you want to earn the miles in ahead of time.
It’s interesting to me that Marriott is rolling out an addition to the promo so shortly after they announced their summer promotion. It seems similar to what they did earlier this year. Once is an anomaly, twice is a pattern, so maybe they feel like this gives them more chances to talk to their customers about ways to earn miles.
Since this is only for mileage earners (not Marriott Rewards points) I wonder if this was planned originally or a way to give more folks a chance to earn in a promo this summer. I wasn’t expecting good promos for summer given the normal increase in luxury travel amidst already high occupancy. Neither this or their original promo are “blow your doors off” kind of stuff, but it’s a nice nod to those earning miles for their stays
As with all other promos, my suggestion here is to go ahead and register now so you don’t forget, even if you don’t have any full-service Marriott reservations in your future. It’s free, so better to do it now rather than miss an opportunity.

this seems to be a dud … you have to be signed up to earn miles and not points — so 1000 miles and zero points doesn’t seem that good a deal: “Members electing to earn Marriott Rewards points are not eligible for this promotion.”
Stacey, that is a dud. I didn’t notice that in the registration process.
Its little stuff like what Stacey said, and this: “Stays must be booked June 1 through July 15, 2016” that blows my mind. Now I’m going to go and cancel a bunch of reservations because I booked them before 1 June? Waste of time. I get that they’re (1) putting barriers up to mitigate loss (although this is minimal at best), and (2) they want to have some sort of metric for how effective the promotion is. I do wonder whether they have a metric for how many reservations are cancelled, only to be re-booked after 1 June….
Trevor, I doubt they track the metric of people who cancel and rebook. SPG might with their tech but not sure the Marriott tech is good enough to do that. The real solution here is to announce the promos sooner so customers can plan ahead and make actual purchasing decisions based on these bonuses.
Planning ahead would be an improvement.
