Starwood Extends The Expiration On Their New Suite Night Awards. Why That Really Doesn’t Matter

Starwood Preferred Guest rolled out a bunch of changes to their program back in 2012, all of which were promising: Lifetime Gold And Platinum Status Suite Night Awards For Staying 50 Nights In a Year Personal Ambassador For Staying 100 Nights In a Year 4 Starpoints Per Dollar And A Guaranteed Early Check-in Benefit New Amenity Choices For Gold And Platinum Members. I was certainly excited about all of these.  I had begun to prefer Hyatt much more than Starwood, and these changes brought Starwood closer to Hyatt in my […]

Starwood Preferred Guest Introduces Hot Escapes

Today is the last day to vote for your favorite picture and help someone win a free airline ticket. Finding a great low fare that everyone doesn’t know about is one of the toughest things to do if you don’t obsess about travel like I do.  There are plenty of hidden places to find them, but by nature they’re not easy to find, organized in one place. For those that are familiar with Starwood Preferred Guest, you may have been a fan of either Starpicks or Beat the Timer.  These […]

Free $25 In Southwest Cash If You Have A Four Points By Sheraton Stay

I stumbled on this one a bit late.  Especially since I had a Four Points stay a couple weeks ago and didn’t score the $25 myself.  This runs through the end of July, and essentially gives you a $25 discount on a future Southwest flight.   From what I can tell spot-checking the rates on a couple of properties it seems you can get all/most of the same rates through this plan as are available on Starwood’s website.  So, if you have a stay at Four Points by Sheraton this […]

What New Places Can Your Starwood Points Take You?

I always keep an eye on this helpful thread on Milepoint for new Starwood Preferred Guest property announcements. Over the last few weeks I’ve seen some interesting additions, things that I feel definitely add value.  This review will consist mostly of cool places you can redeem your points and not on new hotels for the business traveler.  No offense, but I don’t consider the new Aloft Tulsa Downtown a good redemption option for vacation. Westin Puntacana:  Punta Cana is a small town on the Eastern tip of Dominican Republic.  I […]

Club Carlson Summer Promo Announced: 10,000 Bonus Points For Every Two-Night Stay

Club Carlson is out with a new promotion.  The basics are that you’ll earn 10,000 bonus points for every stay at least 2 nights in length.  You can see full promotion details here. As you can see, the promo runs from May 13th to July 21st, 2013.  That means you might be able to squeeze in some bonus points on summer leisure travel. I value Club Carlson points at about a half a cent a piece.  That makes this bonus worth about $50 in Club Carlson points earned extra per […]

Launchpoint Contestant Review: PointsHound

As a follow-up to my LaunchPoint post earlier this week, I’ll be trying to do reviews of the first class of Launchpoint contestants who are vying for $50,000 in support for their travel-startup.  My first test was PointsHound. First, a brief summary of what PointsHound does.  At first glance, they look like a standard hotel booking engine/online travel agency (OTA).  But, PointsHound has plugged an interesting twist into that normal booking process.  They reward your booking with airline miles (as well as a few non-travel reward programs).  There’s two ways […]

Starwood’s New Promo Starts Tomorrow. Don’t Forget To Register

A few weeks ago I detailed SPG’s new promo, Double Take. It’s pretty straight forward.  Double points on all stays through July 31, 2013.  There’s a decent amount of properties not participating, but still plenty to earn the bonus at. They’re also offering a 500 point bonus for booking using your mobile device.  I liken this to the days where the airlines offered bonus miles to print your boarding pass online.  Now I don’t even think twice about getting my boarding pass electronically, with no bonus from the airlines.  Starwood […]

1st Quarter Status Check

Airline and hotel elite status is always a game of “what have you done for me lately”.  An airline might be thrilled that you flew 150,000 miles last year with them.  But, with just a few minor exceptions, they’re not going to give you a head start on this year’s status because you flew 50,000 more than you needed to in order to qualify for their top-tier earnable status such as American Airlines’ Executive Platinum or United 1K (United has another level above 1K, but the qualifications are not published, […]

Starwood Announces Their Next Promo A Bit Early, Offering Both Double Points And A Mobile Booking Bonus

I always like to see hotel chains announce their promos early.  While I generally don’t change my travel patterns based on the promos, lots of travelers do.  More time to plan for those that need to do so is never a bad thing. That’s why I was happy to see Starwood Preferred Guest announce their next promo this morning on Milepoint.  It’s called Double Take, offering double points for all stays from May 1st to July 31st, 2013.   Unfortunately, there’s a list of properties that aren’t participating in double […]

New Starwood Property In Cupertino Tweaks The Brand Standard A Bit To Feature Apple Technology

Starwood continued its growth in the US this week with a new Aloft property in Cupertino, CA, literally right next door to Apple’s HQ. Aloft isn’t my favorite Starwood brand; I’m more of a full-service guy.  But, one of the cool things I saw in the press release was that the rooms are featuring Apple TVs.  For those not familiar, Apple TV is a small box that hooks into your TV and allows you to stream a bunch of things including your iTunes content, any movies or TV shows you […]
