New Starwood And Hyatt Properties In The US And Europe

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway for a StarMegaDO4 goodie bag. Starwood and Hyatt are busy expanding again in some interesting and useful places. Starwood announced that the new Westin Houston Downtown is now taking reservations.  It’s located right across from Minute Maid Park, so if you’re one of the 7 people headed to an Astros game this season you’ll have a new place to pick for your rooming needs.  With the recent emphasis on limited or select service property development in the US, I’m always happy to see more […]

Starpoint Sale. Should You Buy?

Courtesy of View From The Wing, Starwood Preferred Guest is selling Starpoints at up to a 25% discount right now. Like all new things, I came to the hobby of collecting miles and points with a ton of excitement and not enough information.  But, I did have a goal.  This was probably a decade ago or better and I really wanted lifetime Gold status on American Airlines.  The problem?  I didn’t fly a whole heck of a lot. I learned about Starwood and the ultra-cool ability to transfer points to […]

A Study Of Dark: Our Brief, Powerless Stay At St. Regis San Francisco

How do you turn a bummer stay into something your daughter can’t stop talking about?  It starts with having a convincing and imaginative wife. I posted a couple of days ago asking for reader opinions on compensation for the stay, but there’s still a few fun facts about the story. First, some brief details.  The St. Regis San Francisco is a category 6 property in the Starwood Preferred Guest program which means a 20,000 point per night redemption rate.  This was only going to be a one-night stay, and we had […]

Question: Your 4 Diamond Hotel Loses Power. What Do You Ask For?

This is a great reader participation exercise, because I’m very interested to hear what others would do in this situation.  I had thought that our one-night stop at the St. Regis San Francisco would be a quick post, but it turns out to be a bit more detailed than that. First, some quick background.  This was a one-night stay on points (20,000 points a night) and I had redeemed a suite night upgrade.  Suite night upgrades are a new benefit Starwood Preferred Guest awards members who stay at least 50 […]

What Makes a Moment? Video of My Wife Playing Tennis With Andre Agassi. Thanks, Starwood Preferred Guest!

I had one of my best point redemptions of all time last year when I redeemed a trunk load of Starwood Preferred Guest points for a tennis lesson with Andre Agassi at the US Open.  My wife was the lucky participant and we had an awesome experience. I got some video at the event but it was pretty bad.  While I was investigating a new SPG Moments auction earlier today I found a link to a video that shows Andre giving my wife (in green, looking awesome) a quick lesson […]

Breaking Down The Recent Category Changes At Starwood Preferred Guest

There’s been a flurry of activity the past 6 weeks in regards to changing values at the major hotel chains.  Some good, mostly bad.  We had Priority Club, Marriott and Hilton all handing out some well placed kicks to the teeth while Hyatt had a quieter approach, and certainly a more generous one.  The last shoe has dropped with Starwood Preferred Guest weighing in on their category changes.  They lie firmly in between Hyatt and everyone else.  Not horrible, not great. Since I have more interest in the SPG program […]

Trying To Add Perspective To Recent Changes In Hotel Loyalty

I’m a bit behind reporting on the recent changes to the Hilton program that broke yesterday.  I saw the e-mail when it came out but a crazy schedule pulled me away from banging out a quick post on the info.  And, I wasn’t a big fan of the Hilton program before the devaluation.  But, I do think it’s worth considering the industry as a whole and take some educated guesses on where we’re heading. But first, the Hilton changes. View from the Wing has a ton of detail about the changes, so I’ll […]

I Guess It’s Good I Waited To Extoll The Virtues Of Starwood Preferred Guest’s New Crossover Rewards

There’s been a bunch of buzz in the blogsphere about a new program Starwood Preferred Guest had coming out called “Crossover Rewards”.  Now, I’m a Platinum member of Starwood Preferred Guest so these discussions perked up my ears. The rumors flying around yesterday were people who were announcing they had confirmed reports upgrades on Delta were part of the benefit package.  And, these were very credible members of the travel writing community. But, things were made official today by SPG, and as View From the Wing pointed out, that upgrade benefit […]

Hyatt Announces Their Spring Promotion

View From The Wing has confirmation of the upcoming Hyatt promotion.  It runs from March 1st to May 31, 2013.  The confirmed details are: 3000 bonus points for every 3 nights stayed during the promotion period. 20% bonus for holders of the Hyatt Visa Card. Registration begins February 15th. So, how does this stack up against current promos by other chains past Hyatt promos?  Here’s a brief summary of Hyatt’s 2012 Fall Promo: Fall Hyatt Promo:  Guests earned 5,000 points after 5 nights, and an additional 10,000 points for each […]

What Am I Missing?

I remember when I started writing this blog a few years ago.  I had a big pile of miles and points and I enjoyed helping other people plan their travel.  So, I figured I would write about it once in a while.  I figured I would write about a bunch of other things as well.  After all, who would mind?  I only had a few followers, mostly family and friends.  So, while there was travel, there were lots of other topics as well. Earlier this year, I decided to focus […]
