United Airlines announced they’re buying a new airplane, the CRJ-550 from Bombardier. This 50-seat plane will be built on the CRJ-700 body. And, the Airbus 319 and 320 get more business class seats while the Boeing 767-300ER gets a lot more business class.
Boeing lost a key vote in their case against Bombardier. The International Trade Commission ruled that Bombardier didn’t violate international trade law. This opens the door for Bombardier to sell directly to US-based airlines, though they’ve chosen to form a joint venture with Airbus instead
I’ll admit, I somehow missed that Airbus and Bombardier talked about a tie-up on the C Series a couple years ago. That would have made yesterday’s announcement a bit less surprising to me. I can’t tell if Boeing saw this coming. And, I can’t really say what’s going to happen next.
