7 Ways To Stay Healthy While Traveling

If you’ve hung around my blog long enough, you’ve seen some of the posts my wife has contributed.  She’s absolutely the healthier one in the family.  As we close in on summer, Michelle is back to talk about ways to stay healthy while traveling.  If you enjoy this post, I’ve included a list of some of her earlier posts you might enjoy.

Recently I have had the privilege to travel several weeks in a row with family.  As many of you are aware, trying to maintain a somewhat healthy lifestyle on the road comes with many challenges.  As some of you know, I am the healthy one in the Pizza family.  Often you’ll find me turning my nose up to my husband’s doughnut craze.  With that addiction always hovering over me on trips I typically have to work a bit harder to sneak in healthy habits for myself and my family.  With summer travel just around the corner,  I wanted to share a few tricks I often use to help stay healthy while traveling.

1. Stay Hydrated

I typically fill up a glass of water prior to bed and leave it on my nightstand. I drink it as soon as I wake up in the morning.  8 ounces of water before my day even gets started.  I make a point to have a glass of water prior to every meal ( 24 more ounces down).

Finally, I always carry an insulated water bottle with me wherever I go.  Our favorite water bottles made by ThinkSport.  They are stainless and it’s double walled insulation keeps our water chilled all day long.  Frequently, we’ll wake up the next day with ice still in our bottle.  If you do decide to indulge in alcohol, make a point to drink a glass of water in between each drink.

2. Carry Healthy Snacks

Bags of nuts and trail mix are easy to carry.  There are  a wide range of choices for variety, non-perishable for the most part. Most importantly, you’ll find them available just about anywhere.  Nuts are full of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.  Plus they are loaded with protein which helps you feel fuller longer.

3. Skip The Processed Junk Food

You’re on vacation and you likely even tried to get healthy and lose a few pounds to look and feel your best for your trip.  Don’t sabotage now. Indulge in all the local delicacies instead.  Most likely those items are fresh and better for you.

4. Apply Sunscreen

Our favorite is again a product by ThinkSport.  It is a mineral based sunscreen that easily rubs in without all of the nasty chemicals.  My pale freckle-faced kiddos give it 2 thumbs up for smell too.

5. Eat Fatty Fish

I have made a pact with myself when I travel. I always try to eat something that I won’t fix at home and can’t get anywhere else.  This is especially true in areas where fish and seafood are prevalent.  Your cholesterol level will thank you for it!

6. Get Enough Sleep (And Rest)!

As a family, we will typically go hard for a day or two sightseeing and then we rest on the 3rd day (except when my husband plans waaaaay too much).  This is typically a fun day for the kids where we stay near the hotel.  Keep in mind that your kids may not react well to the time change when traveling abroad.  Allow for extra time in the mornings the first few days of your trip.

 7. Take Care Of Your Gut (For Real!)

Finally, take care of your gut and carry probiotics with you.  Traveling can cause havoc on your stomach and the good bacteria from probiotics can help tremendously.  You’ll fell less bloated and have more energy!
