Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide

New Hyatt & Starwood Properties, Summer 2013 Edition

Where are the two best (IMO) hotel chains expanding right now?  Here’s a sampling of some cool properties to visit or useful properties to earn points at that Hyatt and Starwood are reporting lately: Hyatt opened a new full-service hotel in Atlanta, right in the heart of Midtown.  There isn’t a whole lot I’ve stayed at in that part of Atlanta that’s upscale.  There’s a Ritz that I’ve never tried and the Westin Peachtree Plaza, which, IMO, is a property that’s a generation too old.  I generally stay in Buckhead […]

Starwood’s Fall Promo Is Out: Take Two Is Par For The Course

Starwood has announced it’s fall promo, Take Two.  Since it runs through virtually the end of the year, this will likely be the last promo of 2013 for Starwood Preferred Guest. From September 1st, 2013 until December 15, 2013 all SPG members will be able to earn double Starpoints at all participating properties. There’s also a component to earn bonus points based on the total nights you stay during the promo period.  You’ll earn 2500 bonus points for every 5 nights you stay, up to a total of 10,000 bonus […]

It’s (Way Past) Time For Hotel Chains To Take More Control Of Their Inventory

Dear Hyatt (and Starwood, Marriott, Hilton, though I don’t value each of you as much as my Hyatt relationship), Why do you let the likes of Expedia control so much of your inventory? Sure, choice is good. And, there are plenty of infrequent travelers that use online travel agencies (OTAs) to figure out where they want to stay. But, really. I used to work in the hotel industry a mere 15-ish years ago. Back then we were concerned about people booking outside of our channels and paying outsized commissions. The […]

News And Notes For Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Southwest has released the 50,000 miles sign-up bonus for their credit card again.  The offer may be somewhat targeted, but a fair amount of people are reporting success getting the offer.  You can find more info here.  If you don’t get the link that way, some of the travel bloggers like Million Mile Secrets still have 50K offer links on their sites. Loyalty Lobby has picked up a slightly unpleasant change in the Starwood Preferred Guest program.  One of the hallmarks of the SPG program is the ability to transfer […]

StarMegaDO4: Sheraton Gateway LAX Review

Just the beginning of my journey for StarMegaDO4.  Previous posts can be found below: StarMegaDO4: Getting Under Way I landed right around 8pm.  Since it was a nice night in LA and I was landing at T7 (making it a short walk) I decided to walk to Sheraton Gateway.  This was my first stay at the property though I’ve driven by it many times. Check-in was relatively smooth.  I was given access to the club but told there were no suite upgrades available. I was told breakfast would be in […]

Quick Shots: Things You Should See on October 13th

View From The Wing has reported that you can now search for Air Berlin and Finnair awards online with American Airlines.   For me, one of the biggest mileage values is using your miles for international travel (especially in business class).  You used to have to call the airlines to find availability, and this could be a long painful process.  AA has been adding carriers throughout the year, including Qantas earlier in the year.  I already like their online search engine, and this is just another plus. Mommy Points has the […]

Hyatt Copies A Nifty Starwood Feature: A Headstart On Status By Spending On Their Card

If you’re a holder of the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Card, you should be familiar with their feature that gives you stay and night credit every year you maintain their card.  You can get 5 nights and 2 stays by holding the SPG Amex, and actually double that if you have both the personal and corporate versions of the card. Now, Hyatt’s version of this benefit is significantly less rewarding.  You need to spend $20,000 on their card to get 2 stays and 5 nights of credit.  If you […]

It’s Time To Register For Starwood’s Fall Promo

I wrote about Starwood’s promo a couple weeks ago when it was announced. And, while I like Hyatt’s promo a bit better, I’d never pass up extra points. Even if you don’t plan on staying at a Starwood property anytime soon, registering is the smart thing to do. Register now using this link.

Why I Like Hyatt’s Fall Promo Better Than Marriott’s

No question I’m a Hyatt HomerTM.   However, I consider Starwood Preferred Guest to be a vastly better program than Marriott Rewards.  That being said, SPG’s summer promo is still chugging away on it’s summer promo so there’s nothing to compare for the fall yet. I was reading MommyPoints post about the Hyatt and Marriott promos, and figured I would run some quick math to compare.  Again, I have no intention of staying at any Marriott properties, but I know a bunch of people that swear by the program.  So, let’s look […]

How To Be a Hotel Elite Without Living In a Hotel

I always enjoy helping friends and family get into the mileage game.  But, it can sometimes be difficult to get started.  Generally speaking, most people don’t travel enough to earn the type of status that makes for an awesome experience. That’s where credit cards come in.  There are a number of different ways to play the credit card game.  You can choose a card that’s well-rounded and gives you flexibility to redeem points lots of different places.  My favorite there is the Chase Sapphire card, which View From the Wing […]
