Recapping My Progress On Hotel Status At The Half-Year Mark

We’re halfway through 2013 so I figured I would check to see if I’ve made the expected progress on elite status for the first 6 months.  I’m a big fan of Hyatt and Starwood (in that order) and had hoped to keep top-tier status in both when the year started.  Both are smaller than mega-chains like Marriott, Hilton and Priority Club so having both Hyatt and Starwood gives me ample coverage in most cities I travel to. First up, Hyatt.  I got a surprise and delight just about a month […]

Starpoint Sale. Should You Buy?

Courtesy of View From The Wing, Starwood Preferred Guest is selling Starpoints at up to a 25% discount right now. Like all new things, I came to the hobby of collecting miles and points with a ton of excitement and not enough information.  But, I did have a goal.  This was probably a decade ago or better and I really wanted lifetime Gold status on American Airlines.  The problem?  I didn’t fly a whole heck of a lot. I learned about Starwood and the ultra-cool ability to transfer points to […]

I Guess It’s Good I Waited To Extoll The Virtues Of Starwood Preferred Guest’s New Crossover Rewards

There’s been a bunch of buzz in the blogsphere about a new program Starwood Preferred Guest had coming out called “Crossover Rewards”.  Now, I’m a Platinum member of Starwood Preferred Guest so these discussions perked up my ears. The rumors flying around yesterday were people who were announcing they had confirmed reports upgrades on Delta were part of the benefit package.  And, these were very credible members of the travel writing community. But, things were made official today by SPG, and as View From the Wing pointed out, that upgrade benefit […]

My Two Cents On Starwood Preferred Guest Cash & Points Awards

Don’t forget to vote in my poll about the new American Airlines logo for a chance to win a free systemwide upgrade on a future flight. The recent changes to the SPG Cash & Points awards have really lit up the travel blogsphere the past few days.  I haven’t had time to comment as I’ve been hanging out with the family and without much in the way of internet connectivity. The best summaries I read were from View From the Wing, Loyalty Traveler and Mommy Points. Let’s take a step […]

Year-End Factoids From Starwood Preferred Guest

Starwood Preferred Guest has released it’s year-end summary of fun facts about how members interacted with their program in 2012. I remember them doing this last year, but I don’t remember some of the number being quite so eye-popping. The top-earning member from hotel stays earned almost 1 million Starpoints.  I’d really love the back story on some of these.  I assume this person had a large conference (or number of conferences), since earning that type of balance just from room stays would mean a heck of a lot of […]

A Discount On Purchasing Starpoints, But Still Probably Too Much

Starwood Preferred Guest is currently offering a 20% discount on purchasing Starpoints. Starpoints normally sell for 3.5 cents a piece.  This sale takes them down to 2.8 cents per, and is valid through December 14th. While I consider Starpoints one of the most valuable currencies in the mile and point world, this is probably a bit too high of a price to pay unless you have a very specific need for points in the near future.  I’ve definitely gotten better than 3 cents worth of value out of Starpoint redemptions […]

Starwood’s Fall Promo: Comparing It To Hyatt & Marriott

Starwood has announced it’s fall promo (Better Nights). Members will receive double Starpoints on stays of 1 or 2 nights and triple Starpoints on stays of 3 or more nights. There’s also an interesting booking bonus.  250 points for each stay if booked using their Blackberry app and 500 points for using the iPhone app (probably a bit more relevant given RIM’s failure at transitioning their brand to touchscreen). So, is this better than Hyatt’s promo?  Well, first of all, I don’t think either promo is worth switching stays from […]

Why I Like Hyatt’s Fall Promo Better Than Marriott’s

No question I’m a Hyatt HomerTM.   However, I consider Starwood Preferred Guest to be a vastly better program than Marriott Rewards.  That being said, SPG’s summer promo is still chugging away on it’s summer promo so there’s nothing to compare for the fall yet. I was reading MommyPoints post about the Hyatt and Marriott promos, and figured I would run some quick math to compare.  Again, I have no intention of staying at any Marriott properties, but I know a bunch of people that swear by the program.  So, let’s look […]
