New United Airlines Bonus For Marriott Booking?
I stumbled on a new bonus while booking a United Airlines ticket this week. It’s long on promise and short on details right now.
When I got to the part of the booking process where you can normally hold a reservation, I noticed a new option:
5,000 United miles for a hotel booking is a pretty good deal if you had a short booking. I can’t tell from the T&C whether bookings through this channel would qualify for elite credit or whether this would be considered a 3rd party booking.
It’s also worth noting that none of the SPG brands are eligible, nor are a few of the Marriott brands like Ritz-Carlton.
The Final Two Pennies
I’m not sure if this is a new offer. It’s definitely the only time I’ve seen this offer served up when I purchased a United ticket. I’ve reached out to contacts at United Airlines and Marriott to see if I can figure out whether these bookings qualify for elite status. Normally, I’d say the answer is no. But, the notes did say that the booking would be completed at Marriott.com. That seems to indicate it would qualify for elite benefits.
For those not chasing elite status, 5,000 United Mileage Plus miles would be a nice reward. When you consider that this isn’t based on the room rate, a cheap booking via services like Points Hound or RocketMiles would earn 1,000 or 2,000 miles for a $150 room.
Lastly, I can’t tell if this is targeted. But, it does appear you can only earn the 5,000 mile bonus once. I’ll update if I get more info.

Based on my experience, there was a similar offer (2,500 miles per booking) was showing up on the (former) beta website, and it’s basically an affiliate tracking bonus in lieu of other rebates, such as ebates. It redirects you to the Marriott website for booking, so you still receive all elite benefits and bonus.
