CHEAP FLIGHTS! Southwest Is Having Their Biggest Fare Sale Of The Year!
Southwest is having one of their biggest fare sales of the year, featuring prices as low as $49 one-way.
One of the unique things about Southwest’s revenue-based model is that award tickets drop in price during fare sales as well. That’s a big deal for families trying to find cheap flights for 3 or 4 people. A $49 one-way fare can be had for 2,330 Rapid Rewards points.
You can find a list of deals on a special page on the Southwest website. The key detail here is that you only have 3 days to book these fares. Since Southwest has a fairly generous cancellation/re-booking policy, it might be worth booking something you think you’re likely to travel on. If you cancel more than 24 hours after your original booking, you’ll receive a voucher to use for a future Southwest flight.
Like most good deals, there are some black-out dates. Here’s a quick look at the restrictions:
Book by 10/12. Nonrefundable. Seats, travel days, and markets limited. Blackout dates apply. Domestic travel valid 10/31/2017 – 12/19/2017 and 1/3/2018 – 2/14/2018. Travel to/from San Juan, Puerto Rico valid 10/31/2017 – 12/7/2017 & 1/16/2018 – 3/1/2018. International travel valid 10/31/2017 – 12/13/2017 and 1/10/2018 – 3/2/2018. Points bookings do not include government fees from $5.60 per one-way flight.
Taking my home market of Washington, DC, I see the following desirable cities offering $49 and $79 one-way fares from the 3 local airports:
- Charleston, SC
- Chicago
- Fort Lauderdale
- Orlando ($55, wow!)
- Tampa
There are plenty of other cities under $100. But, I tend to focus on warmer destinations in the winter. The more I think about it, I don’t think I’ll be taking advantage of cheap fares to Chicago in February!
The Final Two Pennies
It’s unfortunate that the 2 weeks saddling Christmas and New Years are blacked out. That’s a peak time for family travel, though, so not unexpected. Hopefully the extended dates to Puerto Rico will bring some much-needed tourism revenue as that country struggles to recover from the hurricanes.
