Earn Starpoints For Uber Rides. Awesome!
Starwood Preferred Guest has announced a new promotion with Uber.
Starwood Preferred Guest members will earn bonus Starpoints for all Uber rides based on their level of elite status, according to the chart below:
I think the really big plus here is earning up to 4 Starpoints per night for an Uber ride during an SPG stay. Uber rides at all other times will earn 1 Starpoint per dollar spent.
You’ll need to register for this program here, and there are a few limitations:
1. You can earn up to 10,000 Starpoints a year through this partnership. For most folks, this will be hard to max out. But, a Platinum member with 75 nights or more obviously spends a lot of time in hotels, so $2500 in Uber rides (still quite a bit) would max this out.
2. The name and e-mail address must match exactly on both your SPG and Uber account.
3. You’ll only start earning points once you have your first qualifying stay during each calendar year.
The engagement here is for active Starwood Preferred Guest members. SPG wants to reward loyalty members in new and different ways, but only if you’re an active member. And, in this case, it’s not just enough to have their credit card. I don’t necessary have a problem with that, but I do think it’s interesting that SPG doesn’t want to reward you for this partnership unless you stay in their hotels at least once a year.
Starpoints are difficult to earn in bulk. There are a few airline partnerships (Delta, Emirates) and the SPG AMEX card. Other than that it’s heads in beds, and the SPG AMEX doesn’t have any bonus categories to help accelerate earning. So, having another opportunity to earn Starpoints when you’re not staying at an SPG property is a huge plus. I can’t wait to start earning with this promotion!
