Hotel Worker Strike Affecting Labor Day Travel

Just in time for the heart of Labor Day weekend, thousands of hotel workers at a number of major chain hotels have gone on strike. Hotels in big cities such as Boston, New York and San Francisco are part of the hotels affected.

In Boston, workers walked off the job at Hilton Park Plaza, Hilton Logan Airport, Hampton Inn Boston Seaport and Fairmont Copley Plaza.  There are pictures online of employees forming picket lines in front of hotels in Boston.

Many hotel workers in additional cities have voted to strike, but haven’t walked off the job yet.

A website, Fairhotel.org, is reported to list the properties affected by the strike.  However, at the time of this report, the website was experiencing trouble loading. Hotels from major brands such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and Omni are said to be affected by the strike.

The Final Two Pennies

As a general rule, it’s probably too late to cancel a hotel booking for this weekend if the hotel you plan to stay at is affected by a strike. Affected services include housekeeping and foodservice.  Many hotels never really returned to reliable housekeeping service after the pandemic.  It’s possible your hotel may be affected but your experience may only be minimally impacted.  If you have an upcoming reservation, your best bet is to contact the hotel and ask them for an update on any strike activity at the hotel.

  1. A great many hotels including some entire chains like Marriott have heavily screwed over loyal customers during the past several years. I can’t but wonder if the people are striking because they’re being treated like dirt as well.
