Costco Will Now Sell You A Private Jet Membership With Your 54-Roll Pack Of Toilet Paper
I’m a complete Costco addict. My wife made a joke a few years ago. When I was out of town for 10 days and returned home, she said “Costco was worried, they sent out an Amber Alert on you.” I’ve bought any number of things at Costco over the years.
But, I never considered a private jet membership. A couple of weeks ago I was wandering through my local Costco when I saw this on the gift card wall.
The cost is $17,499 for a one-year membership. That comes with a $3,500 Costco cash card. That’s a net of about $13,000 for a year’s worth of access to the Wheels Up network.
While I’m not in the market for a private jet service, I have flown private a time or two before. My business partner and majority owner of our company has had private jet contracts off and on for a number of years.
I’d say I’m surprised by the fact that Costco is selling these, but Costco has a very upscale customer base. Costco isn’t necessarily the cheapest way to buy something. But they generally do offer tremendous value if they have what you’re looking for (like a private jet membership).
The Final Two Pennies
If you’re considering Wheels Up, you might want to call them directly. I did a bit of research on them before blogging about it. I think the price of their fleet is reasonable in reference to the rest of the private jet market. It’s definitely not cheaper than just flying commercial, even if you buy first class tickets. However, where the Costco deal comes with a $3,500 Costco cash card, Wheels Up was offering 2 free hours on their King Air if you bought directly through them in May. Same annual fee, but the hours are worth about $8,000 if you were planing to fly private anyway.
Happy, ahem, expensive flying!
