Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points On Sale Today

Today’s Daily Getaway features a discount on Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points.

In case you’re not familiar, Daily Getaways are daily deals sponsored by the US Travel Association.  Some are better than others, so you need to think about whether you can take full advantage of the offer before buying.

For the more popular offers, they will sell out quickly, which means being around right when they go on sale each day at 1:00 pm EDT.  Some offers will sell out in hours, some in minutes.  It’s also important to be patient.  If you click shortly after an offer becomes available and it shows sold out, keep trying.  Someone may have an offer in their shopping cart but change their mind or have their computer crash.  When that happens, their bad luck or change of heart can be your good fortune.

There’s no 10% discount this year for paying with an AMEX card.  However, it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the pricing of most deals, with some being slightly better (and others the same or slightly worse) than last year.

Here’s the details on today’s offer:

5,500 points for $252 (about 4.6 cents each)

13,200 points for $428 (3.2 cents)

16,500 points for $698 (4.2 cents)

These are pretty much an exact match from last year.  Again, oddly, the cheapest package is not the largest.  I asked the same question last year, is a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards point worth 3.2 cents?

I think so, even given the devaluation the program took last year.  The exclusion of SUVs from specialty rentals is a big hit, and they’ve expanded the range of dates where you need to redeem double points.  But, for one-way rentals, 3.2 cents is still a phenomenal deal.  Standard weekly rentals are still a really good savings as well.

I’m a fan of Hertz and I like the flexibility of buying points as opposed to a free rental day certificate like Avis and Alamo offered earlier in Daily Getaways.  As long as you’re aware of the blackout dates and what type of rental you want to use the points for, the points are considerably more flexible.  And, given the devaluation last year, I don’t anticipate another one in the near future.

There aren’t a lot of these packages available, so be ready on time.
