Hilton HHonors To Offer Lifetime Status

Via One Mile At a Time, we learn that Hilton is finally getting in the game and will be offering lifetime status in 2015.

Unlike Lucky, I am a big fan of lifetime status.  Since I do a lot of travel for work I don’t get to enjoy my benefits with the family as much as I would like.  So, lifetime status means I’ll be able to enjoy some perks when the crazy business travel merry-go-round finally stops.

We don’t know much in the way of detail yet, other than Hilton intends to offer at least top-tier lifetime status (Diamond) to some members.  It’s unclear at this point if there will be lower levels of lifetime status or what the criteria to achieve lifetime status will be.

But, for Hilton HHonors loyalists, this has to be good news.  Just a refresher of other lifetime hotel status levels out there:

Hyatt Gold Passport offers lifetime Diamond status after spending $200,000 (earning 1,000,000 base points) and 10 years membership in the program.

Marriott Rewards offers 3 levels of lifetime status:

Silver Elite requires 250 nights and 1.2 million points earned.

Gold Elite requires 500 nights and 1.6 million points earned.

Platinum Elite requires 750 nights and 2 million points earned.

Starwood Preferred Guest offers 2 levels of lifetime status:

Gold status requires 250 nights and 5 years of elite status.

Platinum status requires 500 nights and 10 years of Platinum status.

Bottom Line It For Me, Ed

SPG has the easiest lifetime status to earn, since award nights count towards the total night requirement (and towards elite status on a yearly basis).  Hyatt’s status is likely the most rewarding, though it’s kind of like a unicorn in that not many people have actual experience with their lifetime status.  Marriott’s is incredibly hard to obtain unless you’re spending a ton of time in Marriott hotels.  I can’t really imagine spending 3 years of my life in Marriott properties to earn status I don’t find that useful.

It will be interesting to see where Hilton weighs in here.  I’d be surprised if it’s easy to achieve, but we should know in the coming months.

    1. They’re most likely not worth it if you’re paying for all the stays yourself, but business travelers can see some benefits here.
