Google Changes Their Mind, Frommer’s Books On Their Way Back
Thanks to one of my readers, Charlie, for pointing out this article.
Arthur Frommer has confirmed he will begin printing the books and publishing e-books again. The article isn’t quite clear on the ultimate resolution here. In one place it states that Google is licensing TO Frommer’s and then later says it is licensing FROM Frommer’s.
Both could be true. Google could be licensing the name back to Arthur. They could also have given back everything in exchange for exclusive use of Frommer’s content online. I am at least a bit curious what the final structure looks like, though it’s unlikely it will become public.
As I said before, I’m more of a Fodor’s guy. I always felt like Frommer’s didn’t devote enough coverage to higher end restaurants and I felt like Fodor’s also did a better job covering family activities. But, in the continuing dialogue on whether Google will swallow the earth, this seems like a win for those people who still like to read a physical newspaper (yup, that’s me) and appreciate digesting their travel info at least partially in print.
EVERYTHING is digital for me and has been for nearly a decade. I’ve got hundreds of books on my 1 pound Kindle and the daily newspaper has gone the way of the buggy whip. As has watching “news” on TV. I get all my news and information in real time via the Internet on both my Smart Phone and various computers. And I LOVE it that way. 🙂
cholulaf, who would have thought that a curmudgeonly old coot like yourself would go the way of digital? 😛
I’m digital in most everything except for a daily newspaper. And, well, my Fodor’s. 😀
