Cheap Iceland Fares Still Available, Sheraton 2020 and Duct Tape. The Best of the Rest For Monday, June 1st, 2015

The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length.  It’s your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.  Here’s today’s version:

If you booked any last-minute Club Carlson BOGO awards, there appear to be some discounts today you want to take a look at, courtesy of One Mile at a Time.

There are still plenty of dates for cheap fares on WOW air to Iceland and Europe.

It was just about a week ago that the parent of British Airways (IAG) announced they were purchasing a big stake in Aer Lingus, which would lead them back to the oneworld alliance.  Now, IAG is saying they want Aer Lingus to focus on growth to Asia.  India, Japan and China (all countries their CEO mentions) are good targets for growth.  IAD-DUB-NRT mileage run, anyone?  HT: uggboy on Milepoint.

On the heels of an announcement earlier this morning about free weekend nights at Sheraton, it seems that Starwood has a plan to make the Sheraton brand more appealing.  There’s no doubt the Sheraton brand is….tired.  There are some star properties, but most of the time I show up at a Sheraton I’m expecting a clean room with a comfortable bed, but not much in the way of luxury.  Older finishes, HVAC units, etc abound.  The Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey is a property we stay at frequently that fits this description.  There’s nothing inherently wrong with the property, but there aren’t a whole lot of pluses you can point to.

While I think this is a great effort, I ultimately think it will fail unless they kick properties out of the system.  Older physical plants can be very expensive to update and staff accordingly.  They require a commitment from owners that may or may not be there (see Holiday Inn).  If they succeed, it will likely be with a good number of existing Sheraton properties flying different flags in 2020.

Whoever said duct tape can’t fix everything had no idea what they were talking about.

Loyalty Lobby has info on the new Club Carlson promotion which can earn you up to 10,000 bonus points per stay.

The 50,000 mile sign-up bonus for the United Mileage Plus credit card ends tomorrow.
