CLEAR Picking Up A Bit Of Steam? Adds San Jose, Second New Airport In Roughly 30 Days

I don’t imagine there are a ton of fans of CLEAR right now.  When they folded a few years ago they lost all mindshare.  They were resurrected from the dead but didn’t have much relevancy because not too many airports signed on. Add to that the ability to apply for Global Entry to access TSA PreCheck and the proliferation of PreCheck, and CLEAR became pretty much obsolete. Lately, they landed a few jabs in the fight back to relevance.  The CLEAR lines were reorganized to flow directly into the PreCheck […]

Thinking About Asiana 214 Crash At SFO 36-ish Hours Later

I’m writing part of this Sunday evening and plan to post it early Monday morning as I’ll be tied up most of the day.  So, it’s possible there’s a huge revelation about Asiana 214.  However, this post is probably going to end up a lot more random than that.  While I’ve been a travel enthusiast for as long as I can recall, I haven’t been an aviation enthusiast for quite as long.  Even though I had an awareness of airplane crashes back in the 90s I wasn’t as situationally aware […]

Asiana 214 Crash: Latest Report is 2 Dead, 1 Unaccounted For

Any fatalities is bad.  But, from 60 unaccounted for to 1 is a huge relief assuming the information is accurate.  A good night to give your kids an extra hug. There are some initial technical notes in some pilot forums that seem to indicate some changes to the landing threshold in terms of how the pilots are guided to land.  Way too early to tell what the cause is and many different factors possible. In the end, if only 2 people lost their lives in a crash where the entire […]

Asiana Flight 214 Crashes At SFO; UPDATED: 2 Passengers Deceased

It’s very early on, but reports are that all passengers and crew escaped a pretty bad looking crash at SFO about an hour ago.  Here’s one of the initial reports.       **No, you can’t actually click on the last image to play, just a really clear image of what happened.   If everyone did get off the plane alive, that’s a testimony to a well-built plane.  I’m biased as a Boeing guy, but this looks like a very hard crash.  The tail is gone and one engine is […]

Clear/TSA Pre-Check Integration And Updates on TSA Pre-Check Lanes Nationwide

A little over a month ago I commented on the impending integration of the Clear lane with TSA Pre-Check at Denver International Airport.  Clear, now in it’s second iteration, is a program that provides an opportunity to skip the line when trying to clear security in a small number of domestic US airports.  The knock on Clear is that it’s really just cutting part of the line.  For example, in Denver, once you get through the Clear checkpoint, you still have to select a security lane and stand in line […]

3 Free Months of Expedited Security And CLEAR coming to DFW

I received notification that CLEAR is now active at DFW airport.  While it’s a small list, it now includes DEN, MCO, SFO and DFW. I wrote about the benefits of both CLEAR and TSA Pre-Check recently, and I still think both have their own value as we figure out who will ultimately be the winners and losers here. Included in the notification I received today was a link for non-members to get a free 3-month trial of the service.  That strikes me as a pretty low-risk proposition unless you don’t […]

CLEAR: Expedited Security Processing Reopens at SFO

CLEAR has arrived back in SFO, the third airport they’ve added since their assets were bought out of bankruptcy (Denver and Orlando are the other two). Some people don’t see value in the CLEAR program since TSA has established the PreCheck program.  PreCheck is pretty awesome.  You don’t have to take your shoes or belt off and you can leave liquids and laptops inside bags. But, there are two problems with the program as I see it.  First, it’s random.  Of the 10 times or so I’ve been in an […]
