Cheap Flights To Hawaii, Free Starbucks And What To Do When The Airline Loses Your Child

The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length. Culled from over 100 blogs/authors I follow, some are passed along without comment, while I add my analysis to others. This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.

The easiest path to Lifetime Star Alliance Gold is now gone. New iPhone + Grand Hyatt New York=Bonus Points. Air Berlin hasn’t been part of oneworld for all that long and they were a nice addition for intra-European flying.  They’ve had some financial issues and have now canceled $5 billion worth of new Boeing planes including a bunch of 787s.  That’s likely a good indicator there won’t be any long haul expansion anytime soon. Avis is launching a new rewards program and they might let you join. Hyatt is having a […]

Qatar Now An Official Part of oneworld Alliance

I had this post scheduled to run on the first day of Qatar’s full membership in oneworld, but United’s friendly moves with Expert Flyer and their incredibly drastic award chart changes distracted me.   October 31st marked the beginning of Middle East carrier Qatar Airways full membership in the oneworld alliance.  The big Middle East carriers have largely shunned the major alliances, preferring to do things on their own.  For oneworld, it’s a bit of a coup to grab Qatar and add them as an official alliance partner. Qatar also […]

LAN and TAM are two of the dominant airlines for travel to and within South America.  After their decision to merge, it was strongly believed that the combined airline would join the oneworld alliance along with American Airlines, British Airways and others. It’s official now and View From the Wing has some thoughts about how that affects the travel landscape. I’ve mentioned in the past that American is very strong to South America from the US.  They recently announced their desire to expand Sao Paolo service from pretty much all […]

Quick Shots: Things You Should See on October 13th

View From The Wing has reported that you can now search for Air Berlin and Finnair awards online with American Airlines.   For me, one of the biggest mileage values is using your miles for international travel (especially in business class).  You used to have to call the airlines to find availability, and this could be a long painful process.  AA has been adding carriers throughout the year, including Qantas earlier in the year.  I already like their online search engine, and this is just another plus. Mommy Points has the […]
