JetBlue Releases Aggressive Mosaic Status Match And Challenge

JetBlue announced a pretty aggressive status match and challenge for their Mosaic elite status level earlier today.  It’s actually timed pretty well for elite members of other airlines.  We’re at the midyear point and folks should have a good idea of where they stand.  There are two parts to the announcement.

Mosaic Status Match

Elite customers of other airlines can earn Mosaic status through the end of 2017 by providing proof of their elite status to JetBlue.  The interesting thing is how big the list of qualifying elite status levels is:

Virgin America: Elevate Silver and Gold

Alaska Airlines: Mileage Plan MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K

American Airlines: AAdvantage Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum

Delta Air Lines: SkyMiles Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion

Southwest Airlines: Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred or Companion Pass

United Airlines: Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K

There’s not much in the way of elite status not included.  American Airlines Gold status?

To apply for the status match, visit the special page JetBlue has set up on their website.  You’ll need to supply a bit of information and upload proof of your current elite status.

Mosaic Status Challenge

To qualify for Mosaic status through the end of 2018, you’ll need to earn 3,750 base flight TrueBlue points within 90 days of enrolling in the promotion.  That equates to $1,250 in airfare.

You don’t need to currently have elite status with another airline to participate.  I thought that was an interesting point.  And, you have until August 14, 2017 to begin the challenge.

What Does Mosaic Status Get You?

Here’s a brief list of what you can expect to receive as a JetBlue Mosaic member:

  • No change or cancellation fees for you and anyone on the same reservation.
  • 2 free checked bags on each flight for you and folks traveling with you.
  • 15,000 TrueBlue points if you earn status without a challenge.
  • Expedited security lines and priority boarding.
  • 3 extra points per dollar earned on purchased JetBlue airfare.
  • Free alcoholic beverages onboard.

What’s more important is what’s not included.  There is no path for complimentary upgrades to JetBlue’s excellent Mint service.  Mint is their version of first class, offered on a couple handfuls of routes.  It’s much more like international business class (think lie-flat beds) than domestic first class.  Unfortunately, Mosaic members gain access to a Mint seat the same way as everyone else, by paying for it.

The Final Two Pennies

I’m debating whether this is worth me pursuing.  Many moons ago, JetBlue used to have a decent number of flights out of IAD.  The only remnants of that are flights to JFK and Boston.  I rarely go to Boston but do have a fair number of trips to New York.  I generally fly United.  Until recently, most everything on the LGA-IAD route were the smallest of regional jets left in their fleet.  Old, uncomfortable seats, no first-class cabin for upgrade.  They’ve started to add in some larger RJs with first-class cabins.  But, Laguardia is an absolute mess and will be for quite a while.

There are reasons for me to avoid Laguardia for the next few years.  That means Newark or JFK, United or JetBlue.

For folks who live in a JetBlue hub (New York, Fort Lauderdale), this is a really good opportunity.  Jump on it!

  1. I agree that it does sound appealing until I tried booking a Jet Blue Mint flight from JFK to SFO. At least with this search, the reasonably priced Jet Blue flights are inconvenient and more expensive than competitors at LGA and EWR.

  2. I did this challenge last year and hit it with JFK-IAD same-day turnaround. I overspent by $150 but I counted freaked cuz I thought I was on day 90 of my challege instead of 89 lol.
