Half Price Car Rentals Today From Daily Getaways

a group of toy cars on top of money

Today is the first day of the 2017 version of Daily Getaways.  These travel deals aren’t all unbelievable, screaming deals. But, there’s plenty of money to be saved here.  Planning family travel is an expensive proposition.  Saving money is paramount for pretty much any family.

If you’re new to Daily Getaways, think of this as “Vacations For Real People” (or vacations for normal people). It’s no secret that I love showing my family the world. I took my wife and daughter to Paris a few years ago for Valentine’s Day on a long weekend, but we’re just as likely to pile into the car and drive up to HersheyPark. We prefer to travel to places like Italy and Greece to explore the culture, but those trips aren’t accessible to everyone.

Even though I preach the strategy of earning miles to just about everyone I meet (sorry, for those of you tired of hearing me babble on), most folks aren’t trying to fly First Class in an apartment to the Middle East. Or pop over to Sydney for a long weekend. We decided to head down to the Fort Myers area in Florida last year for spring break and were surprised to find at least a dozen of our friends from Virginia had chosen the same destination as us.  Some drove, some flew, all were looking to save money.

That’s where Daily Getaways comes in.  Over the next few weeks, you’ll find some deals that are just okay.  You’ll also find some pretty good deals.  Think about how to use these to save money on your next family trip.

Today’s Daily Getaway deal is $50 Alamo car rental certificates for $25

Half Price Car Rentals

All of the Daily Getaway deals go on sale right at 1pm EDT.  There are only 2000 of these available and since it’s an easy, straight discount I expect these to go quickly.  If you want to get in on this offer, you’ll need to be ready a few minutes before 1pm EDT.

You can purchase up to 3 certificates total which means you can save up to $75 on a car rental (or multiple rentals). The T&C state that the certificate cannot be combined with any other discount offer or promotional rate, so keep that in mind. I don’t have a ton of experience with Alamo, so I’m not sure how tightly they’ll regulate you using these along with a discount code.

I’ve had success with some Daily Getaways offers in the past purchasing them for multiple members of our household.  I bought Busch Gardens and SeaWorld tickets in both my name and my wife’s.  You might be able to do that here as well.

In previous years, this deal stated you were limited to 3 certificates per rental.  I don’t find that language this year.  I’m not sure if that means you can apply more than 3 or can only apply one.  So, buyer beware.

Happy Hunting!

  1. I’ve bought multiple sets of these both in 2015 and 2016. Alamo supplies a Contract ID for you to use along with the Daily Getaway certificate codes. The Contract ID acts as a discount, there may be better super top secret Contract ID discount codes available but I found it was a pretty good discount. The Daily Getaway certificate code then applies in addition to the discounted rate. Furthermore, rather than acting purely as a form of payment, the Daily Getaway certificate code reduces the amount on which any percentage based fees or taxes are assessed. This doesn’t reduce the fees or taxes that are per-rental based or per-day based, but generally it was great. So I might find that a rental which would be $100 rental cost with just the Contract ID and then have $50 in added fees and taxes would — when I added the $50 certificate code — drop to $50 rental cost and only $35 in added fees and taxes.

  2. I bought several of these in 2010 to disappointing results. The 50% discount does not apply to lowest available rate but you are required to call an 800 number (1.866.626.9102) and get a 50% discount on their quoted rates. I did save but not much and could have had a better deal elsewhere. I don’t believe they will let you stack other discounts on top of this offer.

      1. My experience with these are from 2015 and 2016, and for both years I was able to use them on alamo.com for a very straightforward buying experience.

And to answer your question, Ed, to date I have not tried applying multiple certificates to a single reservation since most of my non-work trips call for relatively short rentals such that applying more than one $50 to the already discounted rental rates would have resulted in wasting some amount of the last certificate applied. I will note that alamo.com didn’t seem to have a provision for applying multiple certificates and therefore it may be still the case today that in order to do that you would have to call a phone agent to make the reservation.

  3. A couple of years ago it was possible to stack more than one on a single rental, but I haven’t tried using more than one at a time since then.
