Utomic Is The Lightest iPhone Case I’ve Ever Seen

I’ve been on a quest for the perfect iPhone case for years.  I’ve had a couple I really liked over the years.  But, it seems when the size of the iPhone changes the case changes just enough that it doesn’t work for me.  I like a sturdy case (I drop my phone a lot).  It needs to be decidedly not slippery.  And, I’d prefer something light.

I saw a Facebook ad for the Utomic case.  It’s the first thing I’ve ever bought from a Facebook ad.  And, it’s absolutely the lightest and weirdest iPhone case I’ve ever purchased.  See this picture below?

Those little black dots on the blue cardboard?  Yup, that’s the entire case.  No, not the blue cardboard.  Just 4 little bits to stick to the corners of your iPhone.  I also purchased the screen glass as well.

You can see from the instructions it’s a really minimalist case.  The kit comes with a sleeve that helps with installation.  Between the cleaning of the screen, pressing the corners, etc, I think it was all of 10 minutes to get the whole thing installed.

I was absolutely shocked that the glass went on easily.  I’ve never been good at installing screen protectors.  I set it down crooked the first time, peeled it back up and set it down again.  Not a single bubble or speck of dirt under the glass.

The glass was perfectly clear.  There’s two things I don’t love about screen protectors.  The glass ones are a bit thicker so they feel a bit weird around the home button.  And, the edges at the screen can look a bit odd when you look at the phone from an angle.  Both of those little quirks existed with this screen protector.  It seems pretty “normal” for these screen protectors.  That’s generally why I don’t use one.

The “case” itself seems really durable.  I didn’t try dropping it on purpose but it did slip out of my hands once or twice.  No damage to the phone at all.

Drawbacks

I see two drawbacks to this case.  The corners are big enough that the camera glass doesn’t get damaged when you set it down on a flat surface.  But, since there’s not a bigger case there is a risk that if you dropped your phone a surface that wasn’t flat, the camera is at risk for damage.  There’s really no way around that with a case that doesn’t completely encase the phone.

The other issue is that the iPhone is really smooth on the back.  That makes it pretty slippery to hold.

The Final Two Pennies

You can find all the different shapes and sizes Utomic makes on their website.  The Utomic Edge is $34.99 and the Utomic Glass is $29.99.  However, if you buy both together they’ll discount the glass to $17.99.  That makes it fairly expensive as far as iPhone cases go.

If you’re looking for a minimalist case with maximum protection, Utomic may be a good option to consider.  It shouldn’t interfere with the antenna or any of the ports on the phone, making it much easier to use.  Ultimately, though, I don’t think it’s a fit for me.  The phone is too slippery and I’m just not quite comfortable without a full case on my phone.  Call me old-fashioned.

    1. If you in fact purchased from Utomic, they come with a 1 year warranty and will give you free replacements. Just contact their customer service. As long as you installed your Edges right, you shouldn’t have any issues with them sticking.

  1. My favorite cases are made by Magpul. Thin cases, really simple and durable and cheap ($15-$30). I completely trust it and did a few drop tests with it. My old phone only ever had that case for over two years, and I got a Magpul as soon as I got a new phone. Only bad part is that I had to order it online since they don’t have them in stores.

  3. Purchased utomic from website , came in fast fast install however after 3 days one of the corner bumpers just fell off. They are sending a full replacement. I liked the product , but if they fall off again I want my $$ back. Thanks for review

    1. Jesse, I didn’t have a bumper fall off but I was too worried about my camera getting scratched. So, I bailed and went back to my old case. Let me know how you make out with the replacement.

  5. Thanks, I purchased Utomic for my iPhone 7 Plus and added the glass they sell. I have had them since November 22nd. I must say they are awesome! I followed directions and haven’t had any issues. They saved my phone many times when I dropped it. I am writing now because they just saved my phone from a major fall. Well, it was more than a fall. I was walking down the street talking on my phone when I slipped on ice. I smashed the phone hard on the sidewalk (insert loud smack sound) and it bounced into the street. I am all scraped up and bruised. I thought my phone was a goner and worried about picking it up. I was shocked to pick it up and find the phone perfect. The screen was perfect. I am glad I bought their screen protector as it only had a minor chip. More than happy with Utomic as it really saved my phone. I wish I had them on my body to save me from the bruises I have.

      1. Thank you, I am as well. 🙂
I am one happy Utomic fan but understand how they aren’t for everyone. In fact I just purchased a set for my husband who hates cases and won’t put anything on his phone. Happy New Year!

  6. I’m on my second screen protector . They shipped it for free. With that said I’m only on month 2 and now the second one broke again. You cut your fingers on the rough spots . Not for me going back to a real case.
