Product Review And Giveaway: Reinforced Lightning Charging Cable

Some of the links on my blog help me earn free credits and/or compensation for products I support.  I appreciate your support if you choose to use one of my links.  If you’re a frequent reader of these pages you’ll know that most of my posts contain no referral links.  Those that do are only for products I’ve actually used myself.

Welcome to the next review in my eBags series.  I’ve got a basket full of items to review and give away to you thanks to the good folks at eBags.  You can see the full list I’ll be reviewing and giving away here.

Next up is a reinforced Apple Lightning charging cable by Rhino.  I refer to these cables as “braided” cables, for lack of a better term.  The sheathing on the outside of the cable is meant to make them considerably more durable.  That also increases the price, which I’ll get into more in just a bit.

Rhino Braided Lighting Cable

This is the third different type of this cable that I’ve tested.  I can safely say not all are created equal.  Here’s a picture of the ones I’ve tested along with the Rhino.

Rhino Braided Lighting Cable

All of these cables happen to be different colors which should make it easy to differentiate for illustrative purposes.  The beige cable at the top is a Belkin cable.  As you can see, it has a bunch of kinks in the cable.  I’ve had this cable for quite a while and it’s now become tough to roll up and tuck into my cable organizer.  It still works, but it doesn’t lay nicely on a flat surface and can be a bit cumbersome.  The Belkin cable also isn’t priced competitively.

The red cable in the picture is manufactured by Anker.  It has been through just about as much use and still spools up just fine.  It’s easy to use and seems a bit more flexible than the Belkin.

In the brief tests I performed with the Rhino, I found it’s stiffness to be in between that of the Belkin and the Anker.  I can’t tell if the Rhino would perform the same as the Anker over a longer period of time, but I definitely think it’s priced and constructed better than the Belkin version.

The Rhino cable is currently priced at $14.99.  That’s cheaper than Belkin and the same price as the Anker on Amazon.  I originally purchased this version of the Anker cable because the tip was a bit smaller and fit better with my iPhone 6 case.  That doesn’t seem to be an issue with the case on my iPhone 7 plus.  If the size of the tip is less of an issues, there’s a ~$10 version of the Anker cable on Amazon that more closely lines up with the specs of the Rhino.  I can’t tell you if one cable charges faster than the other, though I might test that in the future.

The Rhino cable is certified by Apple, so I would imagine no issues there.  As a general rule, I lean towards Apple certified products unless there’s a huge difference.

  1. Still the Maldives. I know it’s a lil bit “basic”, but that part of the world just seems so freaking far compared to everywhere else.

  9. Loved Tahiti but it ruined Hawaii for me forever. The native music is in the people not at a hotel show. Someone said if you loved Tahiti, try Fiji. So that is #1 on my bucket list.
