Was There Really A Poisonous Snake On A Plane?

So, yeah.  This really happened.  A 5-foot long poisonous snake on a plane, to be exact.  An Aeromexico flight bound for Mexico City ended up with an extra passenger.  Special thanks to Matt Heller on Twitter for pointing this one out to me.

The Daily Mail video that’s reportedly of the snake on the Aeromexico flight:

Did It Really Happen That Way?

That’s a great question.  So, there was a flight from Torreon to Mexico City on Sunday, November 6th.  It appeared to land early, according to Aeromexico’s website:

But, Aeromexico has released a statement that seems to contradict the original reports:

On November 6, 2016, we were surprised to find a small snake aboard our flight AM 231. Our cabin crew followed established safety protocol and acted quickly to notify animal protective services in order to humanely capture the wayward reptile while maintaining passenger safety as the foremost concern.

It was confirmed that this was a non-venomous snake from the southeast region of Mexico. We are working with local authorities to determine how the unregistered passenger made it onboard.

Our passengers’ safety remains an integral part of our core values and we will continue to work to make every flight as enjoyable as possible.

There’s very little question those are two different snakes.

So, Who’s Telling The Truth?

  1. Please fix your post title. You don’t mean poisnonous, I assume, you mean venomous. The terms are very different. From Wikipedia: ” Poisons must be ingested, inhaled or absorbed, while venom must be injected into the body by mechanical means.”

In an answer to your question, here is a photo that newspapers declined to publish: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14937430_10209031615722002_2123962340336113920_n.jpg?oh=676311ebe61f4930d695e645e16db567&oe=5889A500. The snake is tiny and mostly a harmless Mexican garter snake.
