10,000 Bonus Starpoints. See If You Were Targeted (I Was!)

If you read my blog regularly, you know that I follow quite a few other blogs.  Reading dozens of other blogs is a big part of my strategy for earning miles and points.  I share a few of those links with all of you when I put together my “Best of the Rest” posts a few times a week.  Every once in a while, I come across a link that’s worth blogging on its own.

This 10,000 Starpoint offer mentioned by Deals We Like is one of those offers that stuck out amongst the rest today.  Starpoints are pretty hard to earn without hotel stays.  You can earn some from Crossover Rewards with partners like Delta, and also with the Uber partnership.  Short of that, we’re left with just credit card spend, and on a credit card with no bonus categories.

This 10,000 point offer is for holders of the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express.  I carry both the business and personal version of the card, and have covered in the past why I think the business version is quietly pretty awesome for small business owners (though I wish they still had the Hyatt partnership, or any hotel partner for that matter).

You need to spend $5,000 between now and October 15, 2016 to qualify for a 5,000 point bonus.  Spend $10,000 total and you’ll earn a total of 10,000 points.

10,000 points may not seem like a ton, but it’s double Starpoints for that spend.  And, they’re giving you ample time to hit the spending thresholds.  There are over 350 hotels in the SPG system where you can redeem up to 10,000 points for a free night, and plenty of great hotels that 10,000 points will give you some serious progress towards a free night at.

And, when the Marriott/SPG merger is complete, you’ll have even more. Now, the merger might be a good reason to not stockpile Starpoints, but I still think we’re far enough away from the combination of the two programs that you’ll have plenty of time to burn Starpoints. You just need to be thinking “earn and burn”.

I don’t know if this is a one-time deal.  The SPG Amex doesn’t usually feature a lot of bonuses like this.  All things considered, I certainly prefer an offer that bonuses on general spending as opposed to category spend, since there’s always a chance I don’t have the right amount of spending in a specific category.  But, given that I value a Starpoint at about 2 cents a piece, earning double points makes it easy to move some spending over to the SPG Amex.

Thanks to Deals We Like for netting me another 10,000 Starpoints!

  1. I can recall a time, when at a Flyertalk dinner, everyone would pull out the Starwood Amex card. These days I’m more likely to see the Chase SP card. We’ve come a long way since then.
