Changes To Disney Dining Plans Coming

Disney announced changes to the dining plans that can be quite popular with families at the parks, helping them save money on meals during a Disney vacation, something that can cost an arm and a leg.

According to Disneylists.com, the biggest changes come to the quick service and basic dining plans, where purchasers will lose one “dessert” item a day, but gain an extra “snack”.  When our family visits Disney, we generally focus on Tables in Wonderland for dining discounts, so I had to consult my friend Roger who always buys the Disney Dining Plan, to get a better sense of the changes.

Using the quick-service plan as an example, he notes that a dessert option could have been a pre-packaged piece of chocolate cake at Cosmic Ray’s.  The snack credit can be used for a sundae at Plaza Ice Cream on Main Street.  Given the price of a sundae versus a dessert item, this change is probably worth an extra $5 in value a day.  The potential downside is not being able to score one of the upscale desserts at Be Our Guest.

More importantly for those who like to enjoy Epcot during special events like the Food & Wine Festival, the snack credit is more valuable as it can be used at any of the many awesome international cuisine food stands located throughout the park.

Thanks to Roger for weighing in to help me evaluate the changes.  Assuming Disney doesn’t change the pricing, this will likely be a plus for most.  It gives some more flexibility and value.

I’m curious how many people are like me when visiting Disney versus Roger.

  1. I don’t eat at Disney. We normally have a RV in the parking lot so when I get hungry. I head out to eat something out of the pantry. Plus I go out to take a afternoon relaxation break while everyone else stays in the park.
