Cheap Flights To South America, Getting Sick While Traveling And Bonus Miles On SPG Hotel Stays

Here’s what I’m reading about today in the world of miles and points:

Cheap Flights of the Day: It’s too late to score one of those ~$200 round-trip tickets to New Zealand.  But, you can still get to Rio for around $500.  And, there are flights from NYC to Los Angeles for under $300.

In Case You Missed It: A quick guide on how to get more FastPasses at Disney World.

JetBlue announced a huge expansion of their premium Mint service.  This continues to increase the hurdle Alaska will have in phasing out the Virgin America brand.  They don’t have a product to compete on transcon flights today and certainly won’t have a similar competing product even after acquiring Virgin.  That means filling the plane with less profitable passengers in many cases.

While we’re on the subject, you can get 5,000 bonus JetBlue points for every flight through June 30th.  I don’t fly JetBlue because of where I live, but this is a great bonus for folks who live in the New York area.

There are lots of things that can lead to stress when you’re traveling.  Not all of them are rational, by any means.  I can absolutely relate to this piece on getting sick while traveling.  Was it the food?  The water?  Is it safe?  A bit of wariness can go a long way to a safer travel experience.

It’s possible that Miami could get nonstop service to Asia, but it’s not likely to be American.  It’s amazing how planes like the 787 open up the ability to serve more “long, thin” routes.

Alaska Airlines subsidiary Horizon Air is ordering a bunch of Embraer E175s.  Some of those will go to retiring turbo props.  But, the rest of the firm orders (and the options) may be used to serve more flights in the California market, something I mentioned as a potential customer “plus” when the acquisition was announced.

Some decent changes that make Google Flights a bit more usable.

I’ve never been a big fan of travel insurance for international travel except when we’re taking a cruise .  I can’t say the methodology for one versus the other, but that’s the way I’ve always felt.  This story from Deal Mommy (glad to hear Deal Dad is doing better) makes me second guess my decisions just a little.
