Cheap Flights To South America, British Airways Doesn’t Like Kids So Much Anymore And Why You Might Want To Cancel Your Costco AMEX

a blue globe with a plane and hot air balloons

Here’s what I’m reading about today in the world of miles and points:

Cheap Flight of the Day: Not seeing much appetizing after the mistake fares from TAP Portugal yesterday.  Hope folks got in on those.  If you’re interested in South America, Avianca has tickets to Colombia for less than $300.  You can position to elsewhere in South America from there.

In Case You Missed It: I’m giving away a free weekend at a great hotel in San Francisco.

British Airways is ending their unaccompanied minor program.  I get that these can be a pain in the butt for airlines to administer.  I doubt it’s a profit center at $150 a pop.  And yet, it still strikes me as bad form for them to kill this.

The confusion behind the man who was removed from a plane for “weight issues” (hint: it wasn’t about his weight).

See a review on OneGo, the new “all-you-can-fly” service I don’t really expect to last.  Still may make a good deal for some while they still have venture capital.

It’s never really a good thing when the government wants to start regulating your comfort, but that’s exactly what they want to do with airline seats.

A really good interview with the CEO of Turkish Airlines.  I’ve been through Ataturk airport.  While it’s busy I had no idea they were out of space.  Definitely a massive airport.

AMEX is selling their Costco credit card portfolio to Citibank.  This is actually significant if you actually have a Costco credit card now.  Theoretically, folks who have their card transferred to Citi may not be eligible for a sign-up bonus.  If maximizing sign-up bonuses is your thing, you may want to contemplate closing your AMEX account before the switch this summer.

The rumors this weekend that the Chase Freedom card was going to see changes are true.

  1. “Theoretically, folks who have their card transferred to Citi may not be eligible for a sign-up bonus.”

Is there typically a sign-up bonus for the Amex Costco card?

    1. colleen, there’s usually in-store offers for the card that include gift cards or free membership. Honestly, I’ve never looked online to see what the sign-up bonuses are. But, given that Citi is paying AMEX for the existing cardmembers, I think it’s safe to say they’re doing that because they expect a return on that investment. Paying you to keep/sign-up for the card probably isn’t in their plans. 😉
