I’m Giving Away A Weekend At A GREAT Hotel!

Those that have followed my blog for a while know how much I love to explore the world and how often we end up at really great hotels around the world.  I love properties with history, like the St. Regis Rome.  Not only does that hotel have great history, it has great service.

I’m pretty excited to be giving away 2 nights at a truly exceptional property in one of my favorite cities, San Francisco.  The Palace Hotel has been a landmark there since 1909 (technically since 1875, though it burned to the ground and was rebuilt).  It’s a member of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Preferred Guest, a handful of properties around the world that celebrate history, luxury and service.

Palace Hotel

Palace Hotel

The hotel went through a refurbishment last year and the rooms look great.  Though I’ve stayed in San Francisco a handful of times, I’ve never been able to stay at the Palace, so I’ll be jealous that the winner of this prize gets to stay there before I do.  This property is certainly on my wish list.

Palace Hotel

Located downtown, you can use this prize for a romantic getaway or just to explore the city.  We had so much fun taking Catherine to San Francisco for the first time a few years ago.  It’s a city that just begs to be explored, walking around to see all there is to experience.

This giveaway wouldn’t be possible without the cool folks at Luxury Travel Diary.  You’ve seen me speak about their travel auctions before, which offer great value for travelers around the world.  I actually have my eye on of their auctions right now.

Back to the giveaway!  The Palace is a Category 6 hotel in the SPG program, which means 20,000-25,000 points a night.  I checked a handful of key dates and found rooms for 20,000 points.  However, with this giveaway, there’s no need for Starpoints or cash.

There are two ways to enter from this blog post (plus additional ways to enter below):

  1. Take a look at the hotel and tell me why you want to visit The Palace Hotel.
  2. Check out the auctions at Travel Luxury Diary and tell me your favorite (I might tell you if you hit the one I’ve got my eye on).

You can comment twice, once for each of the reasons above.  Entries past that will be disregarded.

The deadline to enter is 11:59 pm EST on Wednesday, March 9th.

More pesky rules: All decisions by me are final.  The winner will be selected randomly using random.org.  The prize is for 2 nights in a Superior room for up to 2 people.  Blackout dates may apply, though there’s not a specific list.  The prize expires March 31, 2017.  The hotel also wanted me to mention that the gift certificates are non transferable, not redeemable for cash and can not be replaced if lost or stolen.  Reservation are required and are based on availability.  Any transportation costs to/from San Francisco are your responsibility, so just make sure you can get there if you’re entering (happy to provide advice on cheap fares or using award miles).

I don’t receive any compensation from the hotel or Luxury Travel Diary.  It’s a great property and I’m happy to help promote both the auctions at Luxury Travel Diary and the newly refurbished Palace Hotel.  All I want is a brief follow-up e-mail when you get back letting me know how you liked the property.

Good luck!

  1. I have checked it out and it def looks nice, I would like to win because i like cheap and free travel, If i didnt i wouldn’t be following this blog!

  2. I’m going to be honest. I’m in SF for work a open or more times per year. So I’d probably just stay there in a business trip though maybe I’d bring the family for a change.

  3. The history of the hotel makes it seem like an interesting place to stay. And financially, in a city that charges so much for parking, I’m sold on the complimentary valet parking. 🙂

  4. Well, you know, Ed, that I typically prefer Airbnb properties to hotels. The Palace, though, well, pinch me, if I stay there. A magnificent location, in downtown SF, just into SoMa. I would hope to use this free night (pick me!) to attend a Giants game, stroll Embarcadero, and hang at City Lights. I might even splurge on brunch at Garden Court in The Palace.

  5. I would love to stay at the hotel because I have never stayed at any SPG hotels higher than a category 4 before. I would like to see how a category 6 compares especially since I will be visiting San Francisco for the first time in April.

  6. 1. I would love to take my husband to Thr Palace! He is a walking history book, and could tell me all about the significance. We would also spend our time visiting Chinatown, as we are constantly homesick for our years there.

  7. I would love to stay at the Palace hotel because I too love hotels with history. I also like that the rooms have been completely updated.

  8. Oh! I know this place very well, as the dreamer on the sidewalk. This hotel exudes history, as the over-the-top replacement of the first Palace Hotel that was damaged in the 1906 earthquake. Wasn’t the famous opera singer Enrico Caruso staying at the hotel the night of the earthquake? Your contest reminds me that staying here is on my bucket list.Winning would make that happen. 🙂

  9. Looks like a real palace. Would love to take my daughters there. Keeping my eyes on 3 nights at Ibis Bay Beach Resort at Key West – beautiful place.

  10. My favorite auction item right now is 3 nights at Hotel Tugu in Lombok. Lombok is such a beautiful island and I would love to go back.

  11. I’d be bidding on the 3-night package at George House Heritage B&B In Dildo, Newfoundland, if the dates fits better. We are planning a road trip in Newfoundland next summer and Dildo is notable for its name (!), as well as it’s beautiful locale.

  12. This isn’t as exotic as the other comments, but I’m very interested in the White Fences Water Mill B&B in the Hampton’s. It would be just a couple hours drive for my family, so it’s very accessible. I will definitely continue to watch LuxuryTravelDiary.

  13. Gives me an excuse to visit, I love the place! 7 Night Croatian Adriatic Sailing Cruise With A2A Yachting sounds amazing!

  14. The beachfront villa in Thailand seems pretty nice. Thailand is on my list to give a try… Just hope there isn’t an active coup when I finally get to go.

  15. Planning on bidding on the 3-night stay in Hotel Tugu. Have always wanted to go to Bali, and this looks like an extraordinary property.

  16. The Palace hotel looks amazing-I love historic hotels! But the Grand Hyatt Singapore auction looks interesting-I’ve never been to Singapore.

  17. I mean it looks stunning. Besides which, I’ve always wanted to visit San Fran. My chap is a graphic designer and it seems like the perfect place for creative folk to explore. and afternoon tea. always afternoon tea.

  18. looks like the perfect spot for a weekend getaway with my wife. I am heading into a 7 week work assignment away from home and this would be the perfect spot to have a getaway.

  19. 3 NIGHTS FOR 8 IN A LUXURY 5-BED VILLA WITH POOL IN ORLANDO

looks like a fun way to spend some time in Orlando and stay in comfort and style

  20. We *love* SF and try to visit a couple times a year, but usually end up staying in mid-level accommodations because luxury hotels are pretty expensive there! Would love to check out The Palance and see how the other half lives 🙂

  21. Two nights at the William Hotel New York is my favourite on the auction site!! I love visiting New York, I always find somewhere/something I didn’t see on my last visit.
Great give away by the way, never been to the west coast before 🙂

  22. I would love to stay in the Palace Hotel because of its timeless sophistication and old fashioned elegance with a modern twist.

  23. San Francisco has a special place in my heart. It’s the city where I met my husband of 32 years, and we’ve visited several times since then. It would be lovely to honor our 33rd anniversary with a return to the city of our beginnings and to stay at the gorgeous Palace. I love the look of the hotel: a nod to the past (bathroom sinks that look like steamer trunks!) alongside an understated modern elegance. What a fabulous anniversary weekend that would be!

  24. We travel to San Francisco twice a year to visit my husband’s cancer Doctor. We always try to walk through the beautiful lobby of the Palace. It would be awesome to stay there!

  25. Love the grand decor… Livin the dream! Plus San Francisco is a wonderful city! What a great memory for my upcoming 60th birthday!!!!

  26. I would love to visit the Palace Hotel because the rooms look opulent and the location is spot on. Have always wanted to visit San Francisco and visit the iconic bridge

  27. I’d love to stay at The Palace Hotel because the renovation looks amazing and it’s a perfect location to explor San Francisco!

  28. Commenting on the auctions- 3 nights in the Austrian hotel from Spectre is my favorite! Probably worth a trip to Austria just for that.

  29. The brunch looks absolutely fantastic! I have been wanting to visit San Francisco for a long time and this would be a perfect excuse to book a trip!

  30. The Palace hotel seems like a great way to experience the history and culture of San Francisco while staying in the heart of downtown. My wife has been craving Cioppino since our last trip.

  31. I would love to take my wife for our anniversary, the place looks very romantic and San Francisco is maybe the best food/wine place in the world.

  32. Love SF. Have been there three times just in Dec…for work. It would be nice to stay a nice hotel that is not the famous chai booked by the company.

  33. I have my eye on the 4 nights for 8 in a luxury beachfront villa in Thailand on Luxury Travel Diary. I would make for a great girls getaway.

  34. This Luxury Travel Diary site is pretty cool! So the item I’m going for is completely random, but they have a gift card to a restaurant in Niagara Falls that’s currently going for around 25-35% of face value. I’ve already got a trip to Niagara planned for next month and it sure would be cool to have dinner with an amazing view, but for a reasonable price, since I’ve heard so much stuff there is very overpriced. So that’s what I’m going for for the moment. I decided to throw some bids on a couple cool looking hotels too just for fun, but Niagara is my current favorite because the timing is just so perfect!

  35. The glass domed pool at the Palace Hotel is gorgeous! I’m not sure if I’d be necessarily doing laps but I could see myself lounging poolside with a cocktail in hand.

  36. I have always dreamed of staying at the Palace Hotel as my cousin Merete Van Kamp was in the series Hotel which was filmed at the Palace.

  37. Although some of the Maldives packages are incredibly appealing, it’s a little more difficult to get there so I’m tempted most by the 3 nights at the 5-Star Grand Hyatt Doha in Qatar package (to go with my new Hyatt Diamond status!)…now all I need is a good mileage run fair from SFO!

  38. The Knysna guesthouse auction looks spot-on, but I think I’d have to go with the Intercontinental in Malta, if only because the dates match my pre-existing plans.

  39. I love SF… I love SF so much that I have visited four times (greedy I know!). My husband has never been and as he turns 40 this year, I would love to take him and for us the experience the Palace hotel.

  40. We have plans to visit San Francisco, and the architecture at this hotel is stunning! Love visiting sites that aren’t cookie cutter.

  41. I grew up in San Francisco and would love to return and stay at The Palace- such a classic and wonderful place. Ive walked through the lobby, (who hasn’t).
My dream would be to stay there (if I won) and go to Afternoon tea. The Chef there, Chef Llapitan has beyond a very good reputation!

  42. For the auction: the “4 Nights For 8 In A Luxury Beachfront Villa In Thailand” looks phenomenal…. I was planning to go to Thailand anyway as my son lives there, however he is living at a youth hostel and traveling around. This would be so ideal…to rest and relax for our family reunion of sorts.

    1. and I would love this voucher to help dress my gorgeous girls for their holiday
GBP£50 To Spend On Lilly And Sid Designer Children’s Wear

  43. I’d love to stay here because it’ll probably be one of the fanciest hotels I’ve ever stayed at! (Also, what’s not to love about SF?).

  44. my wife who desperately deserves a vacation, would go absolutely bonkers over the architecture and design of the hotel.

    thanks!

  45. Auction I like – 4 Nights At A Countryside Gîte In South Charente, France sounds like a great getaway to French wine country!

  46. Why the Palace Hotel? We generally travel with the kids, so definitely not staying anywhere so opulent and elegant. Would love to stay at a place like that with my wife! It’s been far too long since we’ve done an urban getaway (done a few beach getaways, but definitely a different feel).

  47. Would love a luxury weekend getaway at the Palace and top it off with afternoon tea at the garden court – I know my wife has been looking forward to a chance for a long, long time.

  48. My favorite auction is 2 nights at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur as I have Hyatt Diamond and it’d be a great chance to make use of that there.

  49. I want to visit as the rooms look fabulous and the entire property just looks gorgeous! This would be the ultimate local getaway.

  50. The location of the Palace Hotel is what makes it a place to visit in San Fransisco. Easy walk to the museums and to the Embarcadero along with right on BART, bus, and tram lines makes this hotel the place to stay in the city.

  51. We never get to stay at luxury places like this. It would be wonderful to be in the center of the action in San Francisco and have that free valet parking! What a dream.

  52. The Palace Hotel looks gorgeous and luxurious. Would love to check out the renovations for myself and enjoy a stay in San Francisco!

  53. It would give me a chance to see the beautiful SFO airport. The Palace is a living legend. Oh, how about that Pied Piper Bar and Grill! Yes, yes and yes!

  54. I’ve always wanted to stay at the Palace Hotel when I go to San Francisco and for whatever reasons, I could not get any room at the hotel.

  55. I would love to stay here with my wife in September when we’re going to be in San Francisco. Not only because it looks like a beautiful hotel, but because it looks like an amazing piece of history!

My favorite auction is the 3 nights in a luxury Orlando villa.

  56. I would love to stay at the Palace Hotel. My daughter lives in San Francisco and her place is small. I could stay and not intrude on her privacy. It’s a wonderful city.

  58. I would love to visit California and stay in an elegant hotel – this is what travel is all about. In the auction I would love to visit the Ibis Bay Beach Resort at Key West – Key West is somewhere I have always wanted to go since seeing the old black and white film Key Largo – so atmospheric

  59. 4 nights for 8 in a luxury beachfront villa in Thailand is the auction I’d love to win! Our son just got married in Tokyo and it would be great to have a family vacation in his part of the world!

  60. The architectural style of the “Gilded Age” in the dining area of the Palace Hotel would be an interesting trip back into a bygone era.

  61. I’d love to stay at the Palace Hotel as I left my heart in San Francisco and would like to get it back! Then I’d love to win the luxury auction for a stay at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Switzerland!

  62. We’ve just moved to the States, and San Fransisco is on my wish list! I’d have to try the Afternoon Tea, I’m English so we are all about tea and cakes!

  63. I’d go for the Gili Lankanfushi resort in the Maldives. Another one on my wish list, and a great little honeymoon getaway!

  64. 1 – The Palace looks just like it’s named and who wouldn’t want to stay at a palace for a few days. I’d be checking in early and checking out late.

  65. The Palace looks like a beautiful downtown hotel that I’d love to take my Wife to. Just a short flight from PDX. It would be a lot of fun for a quick couple days away.

  66. The Travel Luxury Diary has a couple Maldives Properties that I’d love to pickup at a great deal. I’ve been trying to arrange a trip out there for years so if some low cost nights came available, I’d love to do that. The other one was the Grand Hyatt Singapore which looked really nice.

  67. For me, it’s the other way around. I’ve already booked an Amtrak trip with the need to stay in San Francisco and Seattle, but it’s way too soon to book the rooms. Having a two-night stay in this beautiful property would be a great score; I normally stay in much more economical accommodations!

  68. I would love to stay at the Palace Hotel. It’s elegance would put the finishing touch on a weekend spent enjoying the San Francisco Ballet, one of the City’s treasures. And the Garden Court — one of the most beautiful historic rooms in a hotel ever!

  69. My favorite auction is the one for 3 DAYS OF TOURS & 5 NIGHTS AT BNB PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO. Our friends have a restaurant there, and we would love to go visit them, explore that part of Mexico, and just kick back.

  70. I have visited a number of palaces, but never stayed in one. zAt the Palace Hotel, I would feel as if I WAS sleeping in an actual palace!

  71. I would bid on 3 Nights At Ibis Bay Beach Resort, Key West, Florida. I have been to Key West, but have never stayed there. This would be SO nice!

  73. I wand do stay here because the location is great and the hotel has amazing character.

My favorite auction item is the 2 nights at Grand Hyatt Singapore.

  74. Favourite luxury travel auction would be the 3 nights at Tugu hotel in Lombok. Always wanted to go but never had the time. With such a nice hotel to stay at, I’ll make the time!

  76. I would love to treat my boyfriend to a stay at the Palace. We live on opposite coasts (SF/NYC), so it would be really special to stay in a gorgeous hotel.

  77. That is one decadent looking hotel. The location is perfect. I would love to stay there and explore San Fran for a weekend. The room with the chess set is awesome!

  78. For the auction I think I would bid on the Waterfield Laptop case. My hotels for trips this year are already taken care of so even though there are some great deals on the website, I would not be able to use them. The laptop case looks like it is good quality and I was thinking of adding a backpack style case to my luggage. It says that it is a San Francisco company so if I win the hotel stay maybe I could purchase this bag and pick it up while I am there!

  79. Oh wow, that hotel is gorgeous. It’s funny how a person can grow up in an area, but know nothing about the main attractions until after they’ve moved away (like myself)! Would love a chance to stay there.

  80. I’ve been considering checking out Minute Suites, so that might by my favorite realistic auction. Current favorite overall would have to be 2 nights in the Grand Hyatt KUL.

  81. For the last 7 years my wife and I have had the privilege of traveling to some of the great cities and hotels of Europe. The Palace has European Elegance right here on the West Coast. No jet lag!

  82. As for the auctions, there are many great choices, but I would bid on the 3 nights at Ibis Bay Beach Resort at Key West.

  83. why? because this looks ridiculous. and it might give me the inspiration i need to start another bay area start up

  84. The Palace hotel is a perfect example of historic elegance tastefully renovated. The trip would make a great romantic weekend getaway.

  85. I would like to stay at the hotel and invite my friends in the city to have traditional afternoon tea with me

  86. Would love to win this as will as the acution for 2 nights at the Hide-Away Guest House in Knysna, South Africa!! Knysna has to be one of the most beautiful beachside towns along the Garden Route!

  87. Favourite auction is “4 Nights For 8 In A Luxury Beachfront Villa In Thailand” – would love to invite a few friends over.

  88. I would like to stay at the palace hotel because the brunch sounds awesome and the hotel looks so luxurious.

  89. In the auctions the 2 night stay at the Williams hotel in New York looks awesome. I’ve always wanted to visit the US.

  90. The Palace Hotel looks like an incredibly luxurious hotel in a beautiful city. It would be an amazing opportunity to vacation there!

  91. The auction for 2 Nights At Gili Lankanfushi Luxury Resort In The Maldives sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can continue to dream, right?

  92. My wife and I will be visiting San Francisco for the final portion of our honeymoon, literally for 2 nights, and we don’t have a hotel booked yet. We were considering The Palace even before reading this post due its rich history and great location.

  93. Being an animal lover, its always been a dream of mine to go to a Safari. The auction for 2 Nights At Hide-Away Guest House In Knysna, South Africa sound amazing for exactly that.

  94. I’d love to stay in the hotel as I’ve booked flights to SFO for the summer and need somewhere to stay 🙂

  95. A mix of luxury from the past re-branded for 2016…..I bet you have your eye on the West coast of Ireland hotel break….what a contrast from San Fran..

  96. That bar looks amazing – the decor is just crazy awesome! It’d be like seeing another, historic world of San Francisco past.

  97. This place is gorgeous! It has the opulent old-world charm of Europe’s most grand facades. Beautiful architecture.

  98. And my pick for the auctions…. hard to choose; they are all so fantastic. I love the 3 nights at D Resort Šibenik in Croatia!

  99. I would want to stay at the Palace as I’m a historian, and I would totally geek out in a hotel thats over 100 years old!

  100. I used to live in SF, and I would always visit the Palace at Christmas to see the beautiful decorations. I’ve never been able to stay there, though!

  101. I would love to have the opportunity to visit San Francisco and stay in a luxurious hotel while site seeing during the day. If I could choose a travel auction, I would choose the ‘4 Nights At Masseria Prosperi, Lecce, Italy’!

  105. Early morning long run with my son on the Dipsea trail, brunch at the Garden Court, relaxing walk through SOMA…perfect Sunday.

  106. My partner is a huge fan of castles. Palaces are like kid siblings of castles – more adorable, though could also be more pesky (when you’d actually need to defend one!). We’d love to spend time in this charming Palace while we are in SF in May, since we don’t expect to be under the siege and could then fully enjoy its beauty.

  107. They have one of the best Sunday brunches in the city! Time for a staycation. Perfect spot to stay to see the city.

  108. I’d love to go stay at the Palace in San Francisco. After all, Green Goddess dressing was invented there, and the last ritzy hotel I stayed was the Waldorf Astoria in NYC-and the WA is where Waldorf salad was invented!

    1. I would bid on the 4 night stay for 8 people at a beachfront villa in Thailand. I do court-appointed criminal defense, as do a number of my friends. It is very intense, stressful and demanding work, and we all could use a nice relaxing vacation!

  109. That two night stay in Knysna would be great! I loved the look of the place when driving through two years ago, although the baboon problem is quite scary!

  110. SF is the first vacation my now wife took together as poor college students. Would be fun to go back now and stay in a more luxurious hotel.

  111. I’d love to stay at the Palace because the central downtown location is perfect to make it an awesome staycation coming as a Northern California resident!

  112. Finding a favorite is difficult with so many great places to visit, however, who would not enjoy a 3-night stay for 2 in a Beach Villa at Loama Resort Maldives at Maamigili? This is one of my favorites!

  134. Glad to have seen this before the deadline!

Like you said in your article, SF is begging to be explored! The Palace is an art-deco wonderland, with amenities and extravagant decor that brings back the opulent memories of yesteryear. Step into the lobby and you’ve timewarped back 100 years to when aristocratic America was at its prime. However, upon entering your room – you’re back in 2016 and all of the modern elegance that comes with it.

To stay at this property would be a real honor. The classic architecture and sheer elegance in such an uber-contemporary city such as San Francisco really represents the changes it has gone through over the decades. Being right in the middle of downtown and along the BART line enables a world of possibilities in getting everywhere from the food-lovers paradise of Chinatown to the stately Golden Gate Bridge.

  135. The 6 night stay in the South of France which is about to expire. My sister said she fell in love with the country down there!

  136. I’d love to stay in the palace to experience the architecture. It’s beautifully designed and can be admired with some afternoon tea

  137. Style and sophistication that sets you on fire..(in a good way)! A Golden Bridge and wine in the valley..heaven de’ ‘Vine’!

  138. I would love to visit The Palace Hotel for a chance to sleep in that amazing bed and visit the city.
The 2 Nights In A Suite At Relais Villa Roncuzzi In Italy auctions really caught my eye!
