The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about  in length.  Culled from over 100 blogs/authors I follow, some are passed along without comment, while I add my analysis to others.   This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.

Here’s what I’m reading about today:

Cheap Flights of The Day: Virgin America has NYC-LAX on sale for $149 and NYC-SFO for $175 round-trip.  The key here is that you’ll frequently find AA and UA matching these fares selectively.  So, might be a good opportunity to pick up a cheap fare and elite qualifying miles.

American Airlines is finally releasing saver award availability in business class!  Jump on this if you want to go to Australia.  It won’t last.

The best award redemptions out there don’t take a little bit of work.  They take a LOT of work.  But, it’s worth it.

NSFW: Best #avgeek travel prank!  Not too dicey, but some language that wouldn’t be appropriate in certain situations.  I so want to get some of these to travel with.  Seriously. Thanks to Will for posting this on FB.

Some nice improvements to Google Flights.  Ever since Google bought ITA, it seems like our old standby Matrix has gone downhill, while Google Flights has not materially improved.  But, I’m finally starting to use Google Flights a bit more.  And, features like this make it a happier user experience.

7% off on Target gift cards!

The 5 most useless travel gadgets.  I agree on passport covers, but I am contemplating a camera…..

Delta no-frills “Last Class” Basic Economy fares now available on transatlantic flights.  Be careful of the no seat selection 10-hour flight in coach……
