The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length.  On a daily basis, I try to keep track of roughly 100 different blogs (try being the operative word) that have interesting things for you and I to learn from.  Some are passed along without comment, while I add my analysis to others.   This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.

Here’s what I’m reading about today:

Cheap Flight Of The Day: There were a few good deals today, but I’d have to say my favorite is $400 tickets from Philly to Vancouver (because I love that city).  Honorable mention would be DC to New Orleans for $176.

Miles to Memories reports on a $15 discount on $300 in Visa gift cards.  This is a good way to satisfy the minimum spending requirement on a new credit card, and also a nice way to earn 5 points per dollar if you have one of the Chase Ink cards.

Mommy Points reminded me that the end of August is your last day to redeem AAdvantage miles for awards on Hawaiian.  If you’re thinking about a trip, now’s your time to lock it up.

Wandering Aramean’s United Airlines Expert Mode+ plug-in has some important updates.

Star Wars fans, you NEED to fly this plane.

Best blog title of the week.  Bar none.

This article about Republic Airways discusses things that will absolutely affect you if you’re flying in the US.  There’s a shortage of regional jet pilots (well, pilots in general).  Republic is one of the bigger employers in that space, and they’ve offered a contract that appears to be more lucrative than some of their main competitors.  There’s some pretty good salaries listed there.  Republic has already announced they won’t be able to fulfill all of their contracts going forward due to a lack of pilots.   It seems like there’s another storm brewing….

Have you seen the new United Airlines site?

It looks like Uber and Lyft have gotten the green light at Las Vegas airport.

No more porn at Hilton hotels.  Well, unless you bring your own.

A reasonable comparison to how an airline recently handled a mistake fare.

I had no idea there was hidden city ticketing on Amtrak as part of a United award.  Not sure if this will survive the upcoming Amtrak switch to a revenue-based loyalty program.

Free Marriott Gold status?  You’ll ultimately need to use Google Chrome or some other website translator.

Pic of the day?  Nice pic of Hamburg by Nick Sheerbart on unsplash.

  1. Their isn’t really a pilot shortage as much as a shortage of pilots who will fly for peanuts. Not really surprised the pilots want to reject that contract.

    1. Nick, I don’t have first-hand knowledge of the contract. But, if I take these numbers at face value, a 70%+ increase in starting pay for captains and $40 per block hour doesn’t sound like peanuts. Might not be a fortune, but there are a lot of jobs that pay a whole heck of a lot less. Given, pilots need a lot of hours to get that far.
