Hotel Review: Sheraton Kansas City At Crown Center

a large lobby with a large staircase and chairs

I had a short trip to Kansas City and decided to try both the Sheraton and the Westin in downtown Kansas City (both adjacent to the Crown Center).  You can see my review of the Westin here.  The hotel is just shy of a 30-minute drive from the airport.

The Sheraton Kansas City at Crown Center is a short walk from the Westin.  There’s a covered walkway that connects a few of the buildings in the center so it is possible to cover a bunch of ground without going outside.  There are both valet and self parking options available for those driving in.  The lobby is open and spacious with lots of places to sit and plenty of natural light.

Check-in was quick and easy, and the hotel had upgraded me to an Executive Suite.  Due to the height of the tower there were different elevators that went to specific sets of floors.

The Executive Suite is one big room with a large TV stand/armoire they separates the living area from the sleeping area. There were two couches and a large coffee table as well as a desk to work at.  Due to the configuration of the room (a big rectangle) there was a large open space in between the desk and couches.

The bedroom area was compact but had all the essentials including a refrigerator.  The bathroom was a standard Sheraton bathroom with a full-size tub and shower.

After I had dropped my bags off in the room I decided to head up to the lounge. There’s only one elevator that gets you there so I had to wait a bit before it showed up. The lounge is on the top floor of the hotel. One staff member said it used to be a restaurant that looked over the city. Due to the height and the building and the wall of windows, it definitely had a great view 0f the city.

The lounge itself was closed at that time but there was still a decent selection of drinks in the refrigerator along with some yogurts. The lounge was spacious with contemporary seating and a small business center at the far end for those that need to work. I had a very early flight the next morning so I didn’t get to check out the breakfast in the lounge. Given the size of the hotel I wouldn’t be surprised if it got crowded.

The hotel has a pool on the roof of the shorter tower. You access it via an elevator on the far right of the lobby as you walk in the front door. For hotel guests, this means coming down to the lobby, crossing it and boarding another elevator to get to the fitness center and pool. Like the Westin, this poll also had a small tunnel to enter the pool during cold weather. Though I didn’t snag a picture, there’s also plenty of space on the pool deck to relax (not that downtown KC is a highly sought after sun/pool destination).

The hotel is a Category 3 property in the Starwood Preferred Guest program, which means 7,000 Starpoints for a free night. Cash & Points will set you back 3,500 points and $55. In some ways I liked the Sheraton Kansas City better than the Westin (the lobby definitely had a nice feel ), though I think they’re largely interchangeable. There aren’t a ton of good chain choices downtown, but both of these properties are clean and well-run.

  1. I love this hotel. I stayed here on a visit to Kansas City in May. I had a great view of the train station and city skyline, which was particularly awesome during a sunset in a thunderstorm.
