20% off Hyatt And United Pulls Out of JFK. The Best of The Rest For Tuesday, June 16th, 2015

The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length.  On a daily basis, I try to keep track of roughly 100 different blogs that have interesting things for you and I to learn from.  Some are passed along without comment, while I add my analysis to others.   This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.  Here’s what I’m reading about today:

United is completely dumping service out of JFK.  I saw it first when View From The Wing tweeted earlier today, and was honestly surprised.  Maybe I shouldn’t have been.  But, this is probably a bummer for a number of folks, especially given the lack of service they maintain out of LGA.  United is essentially saying they’re like the New York Giants.  They serve the New York market, just from a different state.  When United announced last year they were ending service between JFK and my home airport of Washington-Dulles that was a big pain point for me.  It meant I had to fly Delta last week back from JFK to Dulles.

United continues to chip away at the things I find useful, and yet I still pursue status with them.  Guess which one of us is smarter?

Via Deals We Like, Hyatt gift cards can be had for 20% off right now.

Is it right for foreigners to be charged a different fee to enter a tourist attraction than locals?  It’s an interesting question Brian at The Gate contemplates.  I hadn’t considered it, but I wonder if this could be a nod from the government that local taxes pay for the upkeep, thus the discount for locals?

Why you want American Airlines status, not British Airways.

A timeline of how United (poorly) handled a diversion to Goose Bay recently.  Painful.

1,000 bonus Marriott points per stay through the end of August at a bunch of hotels in the South and Mid-Atlantic.
