The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length.  On a daily basis, I try to keep track of roughly 100 different blogs that have interesting things for you and I to learn from.  This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.

Is American Airlines having trouble seeing Etihad first class awards right now?  View From The Wing says so.  Etihad First is a bucket list item for me, so I’m hoping it’s a temporary glitch.

For those that buy gift cards to help generate miles, beware of this new scam that Miles to Memories brings to our attention.  I buy a few gift cards for merchants I purchase high dollar amounts from or on a consistent basis, like Amazon gift cards or the occasional Sears gift card if I’m buying a big appliance.  But, I don’t dabble in too much because I’m always concerned I’m going to mess up and throw away a gift card or screw up the tracking of the balances.  Having to worry about someone stealing the gift card before I even get it makes my mind spin a bit.

Gary poses the question about whether the airlines getting to write off their losses is an unfair subsidy?  I don’t see it as that, nor do I think this should affect their position on any other subsidies.  That’s not to say that I agree with the US airlines’ position on subsidies for other airlines outside the US.  But, I have no issue with the airlines getting tax credits on the billions they lost.  That’s just standard policy for every other company in the US.

Not sure which is more surprising about this story from Heels First.  One Mile at a Time also has a note that provides a bit more detail in regards to her, ahem, offenses.  That Kate Moss flies Easy Jet or that she carries her own Vodka.  And, what does it take to become an advanced, or extra special bitch?

Deals We Like has had an excellent series going on how to leverage the Southwest program.  She adds a new post on how to apply a voucher to future travel.

Ever thought about taking a mystery flight?  Great story from the wayback machine.

The CEO of Malaysia Airlines discussed selling business class fares without award miles or lounge access.  I mean, I guess.  What portion of a business class fare are the miles and lounge access?  If you’re willing to pay thousands of dollars for a business class ticket, are you value shopping for the tens of dollars not award miles might deduct from the sale?

Le Chic Geek reports that Shoprunner, a competing service to Amazon Prime that gives you free shipping to many popular merchants,  is changing the rules and instituting some minimum order sizes.  That seems to be the opposite direction of Amazon, who started offering free same-day shipping to many areas of the country.  I have Shoprunner free from somewhere, but I’ll stick with Amazon Prime, thank you very much.

There’s another eBay gift card sale this week.  Frequent Miler reports on some of the highlights, including 15% off of Lowe’s cards and 20% off of iTunes, JC Penney and Jiffy Lube.  Doctor of Credit notes 20% off of iTunes cards as well.

Confession.  I have very eclectic taste in music.  There’s a bunch of Public Enemy stuff in my iTunes from back in the 90s.  That makes this story on Flavor Flav passing out snacks on a Southwest flight a cool one for me.  Might be worth a letter to the New York Post.  Glad Southwest didn’t Shut ’em Down.  Thank you, I’ll be here all week (By The Time I Get to Arizona).
