American Airlines Launches LAX-MEX and the Uncomfortable Soda Can Discussion. The Best of The Rest for Saturday, June 6th, 2015

The Best of the Rest is my effort to summarize all the travel/miles & points stories that interested me on a daily basis but didn’t have time to write about in length.  On a daily basis, I try to keep track of roughly 100 different blogs that have interesting things for you and I to learn from.  This is your shortcut to find out what’s going on in the travel world without having to read dozens of travel blogs to get all the best info.

The BOTR took a break for a couple of days while I flew 16 hours nonstop to Hong Kong.  It’s back, with a summary of the last couple days:

American Airlines gets final approval to take LAX-Mexico City service from Alaska Airlines.  Delta complains about it, but loses the battle.  And then gets told no by the DOT when they say the DOT should acknowledge it has set new precedent so Delta and others can play by different rules in the future.  Uh, yeah.

Lufthansa sued over 10 degrees.  Sheesh!  Sure, I prefer fully flat to angled lie-flat.  I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t sue over it.

Man redeems almost $50K in gift cards to earn boatload of hotel points while canceling all the reservations. Hotel chain sues.  What’s considered too far over the line in this hobby?

Matthew Klint has a good summary of the recent incident involving a flight attendant and an unopened can of soda.  When I originally read the headline on this a few days ago, I didn’t realize it involved an ignorant bigot.  You gotta love double-speak in United’s effort to distance itself from the issue:

While United did not operate the flight, Ms. Ahmad was our customer and we apologize to her for what occurred on the flight.

Uh, yeah.  We hired that airline to operate a flight for us, but we can’t really be responsible for their bad employees, right?  You take the good with the bad when you contract someone to do work for you with your log on their plane.  Today, United kinda got the bad side.
