16% Cash Back, Starwood Status Match, And Is Staples Spying On You?

a globe with famous monuments and airplanes

A quick spin through the travel blogosphere for some of the best recent tidbits:

Doctor of Credit details how to get 16% cash back through Ebates this week only.

The SunTrust Delta Debit Card goes down in flames.  Like Gary, I’m surprised it took this long.  Part of the Dodd Frank legislation was to tell the credit card companies what they couldn’t make money on.  Unsurprisingly, when they weren’t legally allowed to make money the way they wanted to, the merchant banks found other ways to generate profits.  They are publicly held companies, after all, and kinda need to do that.

Bonus Points For Southwest Credit Card holders.  Even though Deals We Like didn’t receive notification, she was eligible for 4 bonus points per dollar spent.

A good refresher from The Points Guy on how to double dip earning miles and points.

Loyalty Lobby discusses Starwood Preferred Guest’s public status match offers.  There appears to be an offer where you can earn Gold status after one stay in the Asia-Pacific region.  Star points are one of the most valuable currencies out there and SPG elite status is definitely something you want in your wallet.

Staples going a step beyond spying on customers.  After someone was browsing the Staples website for an office item (which they ultimately didn’t purchase), they received a call from someone who wanted to follow-up on their search.  I don’t actually think this person is entitled to any compensation, but that’s a pretty aggressive sales technique being deployed by Staples.  Maybe they’ll give me a discount on Amazon gift cards if I start browsing them on the website?????

Hooters Casino to lose the boobs and become part of IHG.  I’ve been inside this casino, though haven’t stayed there.  I’d rate it as somewhere between depressing and dreadful.  If you’re really an IHG fan, stay at Venetian until they gut this place.

Tiffany from One Mile at a Time details how to access real internet in China.  This is especially timely for me as I’m heading there in the near future (no, not on one of the American Airlines premium fares).  I’m super glad to have Tiffany’s advice on this.

Tons of pictures and another great recap of our Delta plane pull.  Brian did a great job capturing the blow-by-blow.  I really had a ton of fun.  Here’s the suspenseful write-up if you haven’t seen how a group of rag-tag bloggers took on all comers!  As an update, I just heard that the whole event raised over $210,000 for the American Cancer Society!  Awesome.
