Is A 30% Bonus Good For Purchasing Hyatt Gold Passport Points?

Hyatt Gold Passport is offering a 30% bonus if you purchase points right now, and that made me wonder if this is a good deal. ETA: This may be targeted, as one reader has noted.

I’ve gotta hand it to the marketing folks.  I’ve never really given a second thought to purchasing Hyatt Gold Passport points.  I’m lucky to have enough for the trips our family wants to take.  But, when I saw the subject line “First Time Point Bonus-Just For You” amongst the sea of other e-mails, I was intrigued.

I was ready to dismiss the offer but then figured I would run some math on it for the benefit of my readers.   With the 30% bonus, the price per point works out to 1.85 cents.  I generally value Hyatt Gold Passport points in the 1.7 to 1.7 cent range.  I’m more likely to redeem them at 2 cents a piece (or just a bit less) more frequently than Starpoints since those are harder to earn.

That puts the price of this offer above the range I’d normally be a buyer, but it does make it attractive enough for someone trying to top off their account so they can book their next vacation.

In the back of my head, I thought that there was a better offer in the past, but I couldn’t recall specifically.  It didn’t take long to confirm my recollection.  Ben of One Mile at a Time notes a 40% bonus just about a month ago that was targeted.  Alas, unless you had purchased points previously, 40% wasn’t open for everyone.

Keep in mind that you’re limited to 55,000 in points purchases on a yearly basis, in case that impacts your ability to “buy your way” to an award.

If you’re interested in this offer, it runs through February 15th.  I’m pretty sure they’ll be another one down the road.

    1. Interesting. I tried my wife’s account (who’s never had a stay) and she was registered as well, so I assumed it wasn’t targeted. I’ll update. Thanks!
