Citi Executive AAdvantage Card 3X Promo

a close-up of a logo

It looks like Citi is getting more aggressive with bonus miles for category spending, something they haven’t done a whole lot of in the past.  I received the following offer today for both my Citi Executive AAdvantage credit card and my wife’s:

Bonus Miles

This comes on the heels of a similar, but more limited offer from Barclay for category bonuses on my US Airways MasterCard.  Gotta wonder if there’s a bit of healthy competition going on.  2,500 bonus miles means you can max this out with $1,250 in spending across these categories.  Even without much creativity, I’ve got to imagine it wouldn’t be hard to spend that considering these are some pretty broad categories for spending.

The T&C indicate that the offer is targeted, but since both of the cards in our household were eligible, so yours might be too.  The links I received were specific and now both show that those cards are registered, or I’d post them here.  Full T&C below:

This offer starts upon enrollment and will end on 03/31/15. AAdvantage® miles are only earned on eligible purchases. Earnings associated with this program will equal 2 AAdvantage® bonus mile(s) per $1 spent on eligible purchases and may overlap with other special offers in which you are currently enrolled. AAdvantage® miles earned with this offer are subject to a maximum of 2,500 AAdvantage® bonus miles. Eligible purchases exclude purchases made at discount stores, balance transfers, cash advances, convenience checks, items returned for credit, fees and interest charges. Grocery stores, including supermarkets, are classified as merchants that provide a complete line of food merchandise for home consumption. This offer includes convenience stores which are classified as merchants who sell a limited variety of food items. Gas stations are classified as merchants that primarily sell vehicle fuel for consumer use. Restaurants are classified as stand-alone dining establishments that primarily prepare food and drinks for immediate consumption by consumers, either on the merchant’s premises or packaged for takeout, and include bars, cocktail lounges, discotheques, nightclubs, taverns and fast food restaurants. Drugstores are classified as merchants that sell prescription and proprietary drugs and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines. Commuter transportation merchants are classified as merchants that provide mass passenger transportation including railways and buses, bridge and tunnel fees and temporary parking, but does not include the purchase of Amtrak tickets. All purchases must be posted during the promotional period. We do not determine how merchants are classified, however, they are generally classified based upon the merchant’s primary line of business. We reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for this offer.

In order to qualify for this offer, the account must be open and current at all times. If your account is closed for any reason, including if you convert to another card product, you may no longer be eligible for this offer. You may receive more than one communication regarding this bonus offer with a reply-by-date of 02/28/15; however, if you have already enrolled in this offer, no further action is required. This promotional offer is non-transferrable and applies to the account ending in the last 4 digits referenced in this offer.

If you have transferred a balance to this account or do so in the future, interest will be charged on purchases made with your credit card, unless your purchases have a 0% APR, or you pay the entire balance (including any transferred balances) in full each month by the payment due date.

    1. Did you receive an email? Anyone on the site I can go to in order to sign up (as I did not receive an email for my “exec” card/

    2. dmel, interesting. I didn’t get one for my Platinum Select card, but that card stays in a drawer mostly.

  1. They usually send those promos right before your annual fee hits to keep you “locked in” and engaged. Barclays and Chase have sent me those in the past month for the BA and US cards.

    1. Dan, I’ve been a Citi Exec cardholder since the card came out (and a Citi AA cardholder for probably a decade or more). I’ve also had a Barclay card for 3 or 4 years. This is the first time I’ve gotten offers like this for either card. I wouldn’t keep a card just for one of these bonuses. 2,500 miles isn’t reason enough to outweigh the annual fee.

    2. My $95 fee on the Platinum Select was up a month ago. When I called in to cancel, retention dept offered me 1000 bonus points each month I spent $1000 for (don’t remember) months. And they credited $95 back once I spent the first $1000. And then I got this 3x offer. Cool.

  2. Citi is also offering 3x bonus points on computer & electronic stores, toy stores, department stores (with the normal Target and walmart exclusions), and clothing stores on my HHonors signature card.

  3. I was offered clothing stores, electronic and computer stores, Department stores and toy stores. Not bad, but your offer is better.

  4. Interesting. I received this offer yesterday, via targeted email, and mine is for my Citi Platinum card (I also have the Executive card, but didn’t receive an offer on that one), and my category simply says, “Online,” which means any online purchase anywhere (as far as I understood the small print). I’ll max it out by buying GCs, I think. I’m trying to think if there are other easy ways to hit the max spend.

  5. I got the same offer, but for my Platinum card. I’d actually called to cancel it a couple of days before, but was offered a $95 statement credit plus 1000 bonus miles for each month I spend $1000+ for 16 months. Not spectacular, but it was going to be enough to get me to keep the card. The bonus makes it even better since I should be earning 4 miles per dollar.
