My Favorite Portable Phone Charger On Sale At Amazon

a white cell phone with a battery

It looks like one of my favorite travel gadgets will be on sale in Amazon’s upcoming end-of-year lightning deals.

Anker

Anker

Anker makes some of the best chargers on the market in a variety of different sizes.  For folks who don’t want to carry a bulky charger around, this one weighs less than 3 ounces (or about the same as 10 quarters).  I don’t carry much lipstick but it’s advertised as being about the size of a tube of lipstick.

For battery hogs like me, Anker also makes some bigger chargers that have cool technology, like “shake to charge”, where instead of a power button you shake the battery to turn it on.

But, for larger batteries, I’m waiting for Go Puck to release a much larger battery I saw earlier in the year at SXSW that has a similar form factor to their 5X and fits perfectly in the zippered side pouch of my Swiss Army Backpack.

You can see everything listed in the end-of-year lightning deals here.  I can’t tell from the link what day the Anker charger goes on sale, but I’ll update if I figure it out.

  1. My biggest issue with a lot of the 3rd party portable chargers is that the charging is very intermittent. I have a sort of bulky Vaas charger that works reliably. How reliable are the Acker chargers?

    1. Kenny, I’ve tested a bunch as well. I’ve found the Ankers to be very reliable. I generally like the larger Anker charger which I keep in my backpack but I’ve taken to carrying a smaller one for certain situations. This one performs admirably. I’ve been really impressed with the Anker chargers.

  2. Why is this better than a Mophie pack, which just fits right on your phone and doesn’t need carrying around (much less a cord)?

    1. I had a Mophie for my 5S, haven’t tried one for the iPhone 6. They add considerable weight to a phone, which some folks don’t like. Battery chargers can also be used to charge iPads, etc. And, to recharge your Mophie, you need a different cord than your iPhone takes (same one the battery packs charge with, generally). Pluses and minuses to both, but I’m starting to be more of a battery guy than a Mophie guy.

  3. I have a bulky one and was thinking of one like this. The price that is listed is $19.99…is this what normally Amazon sells these for? Not the Lightning price yet?

    1. OceanBreezes, I paid $25-ish for mine, but I’m having trouble finding the item in Lightning deals. Not sure if that means $19.99 is the new low or not.

  4. This item is available on eBay for $16.99 from ankerdirect and free shipping. Assume it will charge my ‘old’ Samsung S III.
    Merry Christmas.

    1. Phil, it could be the previous generation which is still plenty fine. The newer ones get better reviews for charging time and for an extra $3 I’d likely choose that. But, I suspect you’ll still be happy with the previous gen. Anker makes solid batteries.
