And That’s What a Million Miles Looks Like

a map of the united states with blue lines

A million miles is a lot.  And yet, I know plenty of folks who surpassed a million quite some time ago.  And, it’s not the 10 million Up In The Air Ryan Bingham fictitiously amassed.

But, it’s my first million.  They always say the second million goes by a lot faster than the first, and at my current pace, it sure will.  I was putting together my mid-year stats and realized that back in April I crossed the million mile threshold.  Now, there might be a few flights I left off somewhere, or didn’t know about from when I was a kid.  But, I think it’s likely pretty close.  So, not exactly, but somewhere between Boston and Washington, DC (probably over Rhode Island or New York) I hit the million mark.  There’s something a bit poetic about leaving Boston and being over New York as a lifelong Yankees fan.

Just in case you’re interested, here’s a bunch of stats on my million.

How many miles do you have?

    1. Thanks, Amol. It’s amazing how quickly the miles can pile up! You’ll be there before you know it.

  1. Congrats!!! Are you aiming to be a million mile flyer for AA, since I see from your stats you’ve flown AA 60% of the time. 😉

    1. Joey, I’m lucky enough to have amassed almost 3MM lifetime miles on AA, in a time when miles from all sources contributed to lifetime status. That being said, I suspect my continuing stats will show a more significant skew to AA going forward, due mostly to UA’s lack of ability to field a consistent product.

  2. Congratulations. Nicely done, but you need some trips to the Southrn Hemisphere 🙂

I’m 4K short of that mark myself which I should hit this weekend. Started counting in 2007.

    1. Papa Smurf, great job getting to your million! Where will you be heading when you hit it? And yes, I know I need to hit the Southern Hemisphere. 🙂

        1. Lot of flights out of IAD, Papa Smurf! I like your international travel. Plenty of dots I want to add to the map.

          1. As a PMUA flier based in South Florida going anywhere pretty much required connecting in IAD or ORD (and for a while these used to be all TED). These days it’s mostly IAH and EWR.

  3. Congrats on the 1 million butt-in-seat flight miles! I’m a little shy of 500k at the moment. UA is my primary carrier, with about 450k lifetime miles. Don’t see myself getting million miler any time soon, though. If only they had the AA scheme many years back, I’d definitely be well over 1M and approaching 2M. Such is life.

  4. Congrats! I haven’t actually been tracking, with flight memory (perhaps I could get rid of the excel spreadsheet). I see you had the chance to fly Independence Air ! Fun little airline, for what little it was around.

    1. Trevor, what I would give for Independence to still be around. I remember saying they should double every one of their prices for a shot to stay in business.
