Warm Brakes? A First For Me

Nothing major, mind you.  Just something I hadn’t come across in my many flights.  I had somewhat forgotten about it until a friend mentioned to me today he got diverted on a flight today.

It was a couple weeks ago, a pretty hot day in Denver.  We boarded our flight, which had probably only been on the ground for about 45 minutes to an hour prior to taking off again.  The captain announced shortly after takeoff that we had “warm brakes” from the previous landing, and he needed to deploy the landing gear mid-flight.

It only took about 5 minutes, but I gotta be honest, it was a lot louder than I thought it would be as we were still climbing.  And, quite a bit of vibration.

At any rate, no harm no foul.  Just something new for me, which doesn’t The captain announced shortly after takeoff that we had “warm brakes” from the previous landing, and he needed to deploy the landing gear mid-flight.happen often in the air.

Has anyone else run across this?

Any other weird stories about in-flight experience?

  1. That seems quite unusual since you had about 45 minutes on the ground prior to takeoff again.

Do recall if the landing was particularly hot (i.e. high speed, heavy braking)?

I have never heard of a captain deploying landing gear on takeoff.  I’ll be sure to ask other pilots

    is I get a chance.

    1. I wasn’t on the plane when it landed. Tommy777 mentioned he’d had it happen in the past. The thing I don’t get is if the brakes are warm enough that it requires the deployment of the landing gear midflight (i.e won’t cool down during the 3 hour flight), is it really safe to takeoff? If the pilot had to slam on the brakes and abort what happens?
