Helping People

As some of you know, I am the co-founder of the website  milepoint.com.  As part of my involvement with the site, I’ve spent some time organizing charter flights to various locales where frequent travelers get together and experience once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

As part of those trips, we also raise a bunch of money for various charities.  Recently, we visited the family of Mike Califano.

Mike Califano was a dedicated police officer in Long Island, NY, as well as a loving husband and father of 3 boys.  He was killed in the line of duty in February of this year.

We joined his wife Jackie, and sons Michael, Christopher and Andrew along with family friend Mick Connors for lunch on Tuesday to present a check for $2,000 to the Michael J. Califano Memorial Fund.

I enjoyed getting to spend a few moments watching this family enjoy a meal with us and to hear how each is doing in school.  It’s very apparent these children had a profound love for their father.  As a father of two, I can’t imagine how tough it would be to grow up without a father, nor can I imagine the burden put on Jackie to raise these three boys.

I am eternally grateful to all the people donating funds on our MegaDO events that make such contributions possible.  We’re launching a new program soon where people will be able to nominate families or individuals who need assistance.  We’ll redouble our fundraising efforts to try and help as many groups as we can.
